Abstract:
We first briefly describe the main nuclear dating methods (Uranium series, Thermoluminescence and Electron Spin Resonance) used for the chronology of the Middle Palaeolithic sites and we summarize the main difficulties and limitations encountered in their application. Subsequently we list the most important French Mousterian sites which have been dated. The ages obtained show that industries attributed to the Middle Palaeolithic range from ca. 300 000 to 35 000 years before present.
