Abstract:
The chronologies of the Still Bay and the Howieson 's Poort technocomplexes have been hotly debated for the last three decades, because although these technologies belong to the South African Middle Stone Age they show affinities with those of the Later Stone Age and are found associated with artefacts that reflect modern human behaviour. The aim of this article is to sum up and discuss the various published chronological data. The assessment of proposed chronologies comprises hypotheses derived from multidisciplinary palaeoenvironmental studies as well as data obtained by radiometric and biochemical methods since the beginning of the 1990s. We also present recent results obtained by the thermoluminescence method from burnt lithics from the Howieson 's Poort levels of Diepkloof Rock Shelter (55-65 ky), Klasies-River Mouth (56 ± 3 ky) and the Still Bay levels of Blombos Cave (74 ± 5 ky).
