Abstract:
Résumé Les recherches menées à Artenac depuis 1993 dans le cadre de fouilles programmées permettent d'établir un premier bilan interdisciplinaire synthétique. Son objectif est de replacer cette importante succession d'occupations animales et humaines par rapport à la genèse des dépôts et à l'évolution de la cavité. Durant une partie du Pleistocene moyen et du Pleistocene supérieur ancien, la grotte a fonctionné tout à tour comme tanière d'Ours et de Félin, piège à faune, repaire d'Hyène et lieu de séjour pour des groupes humains. Si les témoins de la présence humaine restent discrets dans les phases anciennes. L'Homme devient dans les couches supérieures le principal occupant de la cavité. Ces couches, rapportées au Paléolithique moyen, ont livré d'abondants ensembles lithiques et faunistiques ainsi que deux fragments crâniens néandertaliens. Etape essentielle pour la compréhension d'un gisement en milieu karstique à l'histoire particulièrement complexe, cette synthèse brosse le cadre général sur lequel les analyses plus poussées à venir pourront s'appuyer.
