Abstract: Following the INSPIRE directive, several countries are now setting up geoportals. These geoportals have view services that offer new opportunities for users to easily display rich and personalized geographic data. However, they also raise new challenges. One challenge is the absence of the traditional cartographer, which sets requirements for the development of automatic methods that optimize the presentation of the data. This article discusses five issues for the improvement of map presentation—semantics, geometries, levels of detail, labels, and symbols—and reviews some related methods. The development of this type of method is essential for the success of view services in the future.
