Abstract: Summary Stop signs are norms. Behavior at stop signs makes it possible to discuss sociological problems of norms. Following classic studies by Floyd H. Allport and Johannes Feest this article investigates in an empirical way: 1st questions for distribution of behavior at these road signs (especially ]-curve-hypothesis) and 2nd some basic factors (dispositions and context). At the same time the text tries to confront the older theoretical discussions by Allport and Feest with present reflections. Finally we would like to leave the implicitly deterministic approach and suggest an interpretive model of norms.
