Abstract: We compared the time taken to extract melodic pitch from a ten-component harmonic complex, with pitch in the range 80–130 Hz, and from its constituent sinusoids taken individually. A four-note, random melody was created from the first five notes of the diatonic scale; listeners had to indicate which note had changed on the second presentation of the melody. Note duration was varied from a nominal 10 to 80 ms. The low pitch of the harmonic complex was extracted faster than the low pitch of its constituent sinusoids (100, 200 Hz), but slower than the high pitch of its constituent sinusoids (400, 800 Hz).
