Abstract:
The genes encoding for isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase and squalene synthase occur as a fused gene in diatoms, other heterokonts, and some haptophytes. Here we show that these genes are individually transcribed in the highly branched isoprenoid producing diatom Rhizosolenia setigera CCMP 1694 making it a distinct molecular characteristic. This arrangement of genes suggests a secondary gene fission event, thus extending the rare documentation of this evolutionary event in eukaryotes to include diatoms.
