Abstract: Surveys often close with an open-ended final question. Although this has become established as a multifunctional component of surveys, it is rarely analyzed. Respondents’ answers to the open-ended final question can provide further insights into the content and methodological purpose of the question. Aim This study categorized answers to the open-ended final question in a nursing survey and examined which topics are either raised or revisited by the respondents. Method The analysis was based on a representative cross-sectional survey on the expectations of high-quality nursing care for 65–75-year-olds. Out of 2500 people who received the survey, 25% answered a paper-based questionnaire with closed and hybrid questions. The open-ended final question was evaluated with the help of a qualitative content analysis. Results The final question was answered by 23.4% ( n  = 146) of the study participants. Most responses were coded as topic-related or personal statements. Responses were most frequently categorized as a personal revelation of health status. Respondents also reported on their own previous experiences with nursing as well as their expectations and concerns related to nursing care. Conclusion The comparatively high proportion of people who responded to the final question indicates a desire to share personal experiences related to care. Statements on the respondent’s own state of health could also be indicative of a context effect, as questions on health and quality of life immediately preceded the final question.
