Abstract: Total analyses for ultramarine green, blue, violet and red have been performed and the sulphur compounds, formed on dissolving the ultramarines in acid, rigorously estimated. Electronic colour and ESR spectra of the ultramarines were recorded, too. Combination of the observed data reveals that the blue colour is due to the hypersulphide ion S and/or S and the red colour results from disulphurmonoxide, S 2 O. Both species are stabilised within the ultramarine lattice. Ultramarine green additionally contains a yellow colour component, presumably the disulphide ion, S . Ultramarine violet is obviously an intermediate between ultramarine blue and red.
