Abstract:
Treatment of isolated tadpole ( Rana catesbeiana ) gastrocnemius muscles with either insulin or thyroxine, in a rich nutritive medium, results in an approximate doubling of incorporation of 3 H‐leucine into perchloric acid‐precipitable material. We have not observed parallel increases in the amount of acid‐soluble label appearing in hormone‐treated muscles. Various combinations of insulin and/or thyroxine with growth hormone give responses similar to those occurring with insulin or thyroxine alone. The greatest rates of incorporation, relative to control muscles receiving no hormone treatment, were observed in muscles exposed briefly to thyroxine, insulin and growth hormone simultaneously. The interaction of prolactin with thyroxine in this quasi‐adult system remains equivocal.
