Abstract:
This study discovered the first wild population of common long‐tailed macaque ( Macaca fascicularis fascicularis ) which is the sixth wild nonhuman primate species that performed stone‐tool use behavior to forage for foods. Though this population was surveyed several times in the past 10 years, no stone‐tool use behavior was found until the COVID‐19 lockdown happened, and the animals faced food scarcity. Their stone‐manipulation style did not resemble that of their conspecific, Burmese long‐tailed macaques ( M. fascicularis aurea ), but it was similar to stone throwing (a known precursor of stone tool use) and was named as “pound‐hammering‐like”.
