Abstract: This Resource Letter is a guide to the literature on time and frequency measurement. Journal articles and books are cited for the following topics: frequency standards; methods of characterizing performance of clocks and oscillators; time scales, clock ensembles, and algorithms; international time scales; frequency and time distribution; and applications. [The letter E after an item indicates elementary level or material of general interest. The letter I, for intermediate level, indicates material of somewhat more specialized nature, and the letter A indicates rather specialized or advanced material. The designations E/I and I/A are used to indicate that the article contains material at both levels, so that at least part of the article is written at the lower of the two levels.]

Abstract: This continuation of the English rendition of Einstein’s 1907 essay on relativity, of which the first part appeared in the June 1977 issue of this Journal, is devote to Parts II-IV of the essay, dealing with the relativistic treatments of electrodynamics, optics, mechanics, and thermodynamics. The original text of these parts covers 27 printed pages. However, owing to the nature of the subject matter and the character of the original exposition, it was possible to reproduce here the essential content of the original text intact in terms of a free rendition, using modern notation, and retaining all the original formulas with their numbering, and also including direct translations of all passages of possible historical interest. Mathematical amplifications of a few of the key derivations in the original text are presented in added footnotes.

Abstract: A general review of current practical applications of the properties of superconductors is presented. The devices are classified into groups according to the property of superconductors which is of primary importance to the device. A brief introduction to each of these properties is given and extensive references to the literature are supplied so as to make it possible for a novice in the field to grasp the technical implications of superconductivity. (This is another in the series of review-tutorial papers that are written at the invitation of the Editor and that will be published from time to time in the American Journal of Physics. Articles in this series will be of an expository, critical nature and are intended to be eminently readable by students and professionals alike as a first introduction to a specialized topic.)

Abstract: A novel derivation of the Langevin equation that was recently presented in this journal for a univariate continuous Markov process is generalized here to the more widely applicable multivariate case. The companion multivariate forward and backward Fokker–Planck equations are also derived. The derivations require just a few modest assumptions, and are driven by a self-consistency condition and some established theorems of random variable theory and ordinary calculus. The constructive nature of the derivations shows why a multivariate continuous Markov process must evolve according to equations of the canonical Langevin and Fokker–Planck forms, and also sheds new light on some uniqueness issues. The need for self-consistency in the time-evolution equations of both Markovian and non-Markovian stochastic processes is emphasized, and it is pointed out that for a great many non-Markovian processes self-consistency can be ensured most easily through the multivariate Markov theory.
