Abstract: The frequency and consistency of selection by Physics Abstracts of astronomical articles from three major journals, Nature, Astrophysical Journal , and Icarus , have been investigated. This has involved an examination of the probability of selection of an article as a function of its subject matter. As a result, it is possible to specify which fields of astronomy are best covered by Physics Abstracts . The time‐lag between the appearance of these articles and the subsequent appearance of their abstracts has also been examined.

Abstract: In his article “Reflexive Predictions” in a recent issue of this Journal [1], Professor Roger C. Buck refers to our theorem concerning correct public prediction of economic and, in general, social events [2] . Unfortunately he misunderstands the nature of our theorem. He begins by stipulating the infinite regress which originally led to the belief that correct public prediction in the social sciences might be impossible: the forecaster who attempts to take into account the agent's reaction to his public prediction, finds his adjusted public prediction again falsified by the agent's reaction to it, and so on ad infinitum [3]. Professor Buck then makes an admittedly tempting mistake. He argues that, provided the sequence of public predictions—each one adjusted for the agent's reaction to its predecessor—converges towards some value, correct public prediction is possible: at the end of a sequence of falsified predictions the forecaster, as it were, catches up with the agent.

Abstract: One of the advantages of Festschriften according to a recent correspondent in the Times Literary Supplement is that ‘they help us to find out what the middle‐aged are thinking’. This welcome ‘ Festschrift number’ of the Journal of Documentation for Miss Barbara Kyle provides me at any rate with an opportunity to explore further the theme which I touched on in my Presidential Address to the Library Association at Harrogate and which has most recently been taken up in a long leading article in Nature entitled ‘The plight of library services in Britain’. This theme is the evident need at the present time, in this country, for the development of a national library service in which the responsibilities for different kinds of library activities can be properly allocated, and adequately financed. There can be no doubt that the need is deeply felt for strong, informed central direction or leadership. The lack of it has led to the proliferation of committees and groups all dabbling in the study of information and documentation problems, many of them duplicating work which is being done elsewhere. This wasteful proliferation has, however, the valuable result of bringing to a head the urgency of the need for action. I am sure that this strong central direction and leadership can only come from those engaged in the actual provision of a national library service.

Abstract: Richard Phillips, the son of a well-known London printer and book-seller, was trained as a chemist and druggist under William Allen, F. R. S. Phillips was a breezy, able and versatile chemist who left his mark in pharmaceutical chemistry, in mineralogy and in scientific journalism. In addition he held a number of teaching posts and he was his colleagues’ first choice as President of the Chemical Society when it was founded in 1841. Phillips declined the honour but later was elected President in 1849. He rendered conspicuous services to pharmacy by his accurate and incisive criticisms of the London Pharmacopoeia in 1811 and his advice was sought about subsequent editions. He was a well-known mineral analyst and in 1823 he discovered the nature of uraninite. His interest in minerals no doubt led to his appointment in 1839 as chemist and curator of the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street, a position he held until his death in 1851. Phillips lectured on chemistry at the London Hospital and at Grainger’s School of Medicine in Southwark and was also Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Under his joint editorship with Brayley of the Annals of Philosophy from 1821 onwards and later of the Philosophical Magazine with which it was merged, the Annals became an influential scientific journal. In addition to original communications, it contained reprints of important scientific papers, many of them translations from foreign journals, and also excellent summaries of scientific progress. Phillips was a friend and admirer of Michael Faraday and in 1821 he, fortunately for science, directed Faraday’s attention to electromagnetism by asking him to contribute a series of articles on this new field of investigation following on Oersted’s discovery of the effect of an electric current on a magnetic needle in 1819.
