Abstract: – The aim of this paper is to examine the nature of newspaper advertisements published in the Irish newspaper The Freeman's Journal . This is approached by examining the construction of a selection of printed advertisements, including the strategies used in each, which appeared in The Freeman's Journal between 1763 and 1924. Design/methodology/approach – The central primary source used is The Freeman's Journal and the selected advertisements. A number of primary and secondary sources are employed in the analysis of the featured advertisements in respect to the format, language and marketing strategies used in each. Findings – The case study finds that there were a number of constants in the advertisements examined, as well as a number of advertising strategies employed from the eighteenth century onward, that have more commonly been associated with the 1918 to 1939 interwar period. It also found that the use of illustrations did not solely depend on twentieth century printing advances, but that printing developments did much to expand and progress advertising in Ireland. Originality/value – This case study explores a little researched area in Irish advertising history.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the scholarly communications in Journal of Financial Crime ( JFC ) during the last five years and to study the key dimensions of its publication trends. Design/methodology/approach For the analysis of the study, five volumes containing 20 issues of Journal of Financial Crime during the years 2006 to 2010 have been taken up for evaluation. The authors employ necessary bibliometric measures to analyze different publication parameters. Findings It is found that the contribution of articles to each volume of JFC is very consistent and the journal has published around 30 articles per year. Single authored papers are found to be the highest, followed by two‐authored and then three‐authored papers. The degree of collaboration in JFC is found to be 0.246. In regards to ranking of country productivity, the UK topped the list followed by the USA, Canada and Australia. Journal of Financial Crime, which is the source journal, leads the table followed by Journal of Business Ethics , Crime Law and Social Change and Journal of Money Laundering Control . Research limitations/implications This paper focuses on the publication traits of Journal of Financial Crime over a five‐year period. Patterns of research output in 155 publications are analyzed. Further studies can include other journals in the field of economics. Practical implications Scholars can benefit from insights into the scholarly contributions of Journal of Financial Crime that has accommodated 220 authors from 41 different countries of the world. Originality/value The paper provides valuable insights into the nature of academic publishing of Journal of Financial Crime . It can help JFC readers to understand the most striking contributions, highly cited journals, the most prolific authors, country productivity, and assorted parameters.

In: International Journal of Emergency Services, Emerald, Vol. 1, No. 1 ( 2012-07-13), p. 4-9
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale underpinning this new journal in addressing the apparent gap and fragmented nature of the emergency services research, to introduce the papers in this inaugural issue and encourage readers and potential contributors to support the International Journal of Emergency Services ( IJES ). Design/methodology/approach The paper introduces the new journal, and its intention to challenge the current “silo approach” which isolates the academic and practitioner community. It also outlines the editorial intentions for the journal, linking the theme and selected papers for the inaugural issue to the future editorial direction of the journal. Findings Emergency function resides with a host of agencies including the three “blue light” services (police, fire and ambulance). IJES is an opportunity to publish up‐to‐date and original research contributions for the benefit of scholars, policy makers and practitioners in these areas, including the interface of policy and practice at national, regional and global level. Originality/value Articulating the IJES vision in addressing the apparent gaps in emergency services research, including the theory‐practise divide, this paper provides useful knowledge to potential readers who are interested in emergency services research. It also highlights some potential areas for research.

In: Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal, Emerald, Vol. 1, No. 1 ( 2010-07-03), p. 11-32
Abstract: In responding to prior critiques, the paper seeks to re‐examine social accounting as a problem focused, multi‐disciplinary field and explores some of the possible directions the emerging field might take. Design/methodology/approach The approach taken is a discursive, polemical essay. Findings The very nature of social accounting as a problem‐based field seems to encourage – even require – that scholars approach the subject with a diversity of disciplinary methodological framings. In this regard, it may be apposite to view the field as an emerging, new trans‐disciplinary field. Research limitations/implications As an essay, the paper seeks to stimulate thought and debate but it is ultimately speculative and personal. Originality/value The paper continues the reflections upon the nature of social accounting (in the widest sense of the term) and offers some of the ways in which the new journal Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal , may articulate its purpose. The paper would not presume to usurp the duty of either the community or posterity to determine whether or not this piece has either originality or value.

    In: International Journal of Architectural Research: ArchNet-IJAR, Emerald, Vol. 8, No. 1 ( 2014-03-03), p. 06-
Abstract: Over the past seven years and since Archnet-IJAR has published its first issue in March 2007 the journal has managed to position itself on the map of web publishing in architecture and urbanism. Following a comprehensive process of academic review of articles and research work submitted to the journal, it has succeeded to secure its position in various databases. One of the unique features of the Archnet-IJAR was, and still is, the voluntary work nature of its editors and reviewers where no funds are involved at all in managing or reviewing or editing the submissions before publishing. Another unique feature is that the journal since the beginning was, and still is, made available for free without subscription fees or publishing fees. A third feature of Archnet-IJAR is the opportunity it offers to young academics, PhD scholars, reaching across the boundaries of cultures and regions.Key highlights in the past seven years are important to note. In qualitative and quantitative terms the journal has made significant achievements. In terms of quality the journal became part of important data and index bases including Avery index to Architectural Periodicals, EBSCO-Current Abstracts-Art and Architecture, INTUTE, Directory of Open Access Journals, Pro-Quest, Scopus-Elsevier and many university library databases. In terms of quantity 20 issues were published in 7 volumes (Figure 1). The 20 issues combined include 283 papers categorized in two categories: 237 original research articles and 46 book reviews and trigger articles. I should mention here that the issues produced by Archnet-IJAR cover almost every corner of the globe whether in terms of the context that they address or in terms of its authors’ affiliations and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present findings from the research of aspects of journal publishing in the field of social sciences in Croatia in changing working conditions caused by the rapid development of information and communication technology. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on an online survey of 79 journals in the field of social sciences in Croatia. Findings Findings indicate a dual publishing nature of the scientific journals as they exist both in the traditional paper based and in the electronic environment. In addition to slow shift towards publishing exclusively in the electronic environment, editorial teams cope with insufficient financial support for the publication of printed versions of their journals, low‐quality of article submissions, badly formatted articles, lack of help to the editor, etc. Researched journals use the internet for the improvement of the interaction with authors, reviewers and readers and digital repositories for long‐term storage of articles. To remain relevant to the scientists in Croatia, researched journals must be led by professional editorial teams whose only job will be management of the journal they work for. Originality/value The paper contributes to the growing body of knowledge about current developments in scientific journal publishing under the influence of information and communication technology.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the contribution of Asian researchers towards the literature on service science. In achieving this aim, a review of papers published in five top service research journals is carried out. Design/methodology/approach Papers from the following five service research journals are reviewed: International Journal of Service Industry Management , Journal of Services Marketing , Journal of Service Research , Managing Service Quality , and Service Industries Journal . The review considers all papers published in the journals over a 14‐year period from 1995 to 2008. The abstract and main body of the papers are analyzed for content. Findings This paper identifies the core contribution of researchers from Asian countries. The top five Asian countries identified are Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Israel, and South Korea. Also identified are patterns and emphases in service research across different countries. Research limitations/implications This paper focuses on five top service research journals over a 14‐year period. Patterns of research emphasis in over 280 publications are analyzed. Further studies can include other journals and/or conferences in service science. Practical implications Scholars can benefit from insights into the contribution by Asian researchers in services. Specifically, the paper notes the particular emphases of research from different Asian countries while acknowledging the reach and richness of their contributions. Originality/value The main value of this paper is its uniqueness in discussing the contribution of researchers specific to Asian countries in top service journals. This paper provides valuable insights into the nature of academic publishing of Asian researchers in this burgeoning area.

Abstract: This purpose of this paper is to introduce the new Smart and Sustainable Built Environment ( SASBE ) journal to readers by discussing the background and underlying principles of its establishment, the editorial visions, and the range of papers selected in this first issue. It will encourage readers and potential authors to consider the need for integrated approaches to sustainability problems, to take on emerging challenges in the built environment and to join the SASBE journal in finding and promoting optimum solutions. Design/methodology/approach This paper explores the evolving nature of sustainability, the recent trends of sustainability endeavours in built environment and the current knowledge gaps. The need to bridge these gaps is then discussed in the context of suggested remedies and justifications. This leads to the development of a smart and sustainable built environment as a R & D philosophy for world researchers as part of their interactions with professional bodies and agencies such as CIB, UNEP and iiSBE, and the establishment of the SASBE journal. Findings Sustainable development in the built environment requires holistic thinking and decision making and innovative solutions that enhance sustainability and result in mutually beneficial outcomes for all stakeholders. A dedicated forum, through the journal of SASBE , is much needed for the exploration, discussion, debate, and promotion of these integrated approaches. Originality/value Through presenting an overview of the current issues and identifying gaps in the understanding and pursuit of sustainability in the built environment, this paper suggests potential areas for future research and practice as well as possible topics for authors to make new contributions.

Abstract: – The essence of tourism is the development and delivery of travel and visitation experiences. This paper aims to provide a quantitative and qualitative assessment of articles in major tourism journals in order to enhance our understanding of the tourism experience, with a special emphasis on the management issues associated with delivering these experiences to destination visitors. Design/methodology/approach – Several leading tourism journals were evaluated to identify the articles that focused on tourism experiences. Content analysis was used to determine the quantitative extent of the contributions and the qualitative nature of the articles published in each journal. Findings – Despite growth in the total number of articles published by each major journal, there was no substantial increase in experience-related papers. The findings suggest that, despite its fundamental importance, experience-related research remains under-represented in the tourism literature. Research limitations/implications – While this paper focused on the “leading” tourism journals as defined by various studies in the past, other journals and other publications that target a specific niche readership may also have worthwhile contributions to the understanding of tourism experiences and related management issues. Future research should seek to accommodate this in an effort to acknowledge a more comprehensive list of journals and books. Originality/value – This is the first formal study to date that comprehensively addresses the contributions of leading tourism journals to the literature on tourism experiences. Understanding the nature of tourism experiences is of significant value to scholars and practitioners, since providing tourists with high-quality, memorable experiences constitutes the essence of tourism and tourism management.
