Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to propose a multiple set of journal evaluation indicators using methods and theories from author analysis. Among those are the journal citation identity and the journal citation image. Design/methodology/approach The Journal of Documentation is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and for that reason it is portrayed in a bibliometric study using the two indicators, based, e.g. on analyses of references in journal articles and journal co‐citation analyses. Findings The Journal of Documentation , which is portrayed in this study is characterized by high impact and high visibility. It publishes a relatively low number of documents with scientific content compared to other journals in the same field. It reaches far into the scientific community and belongs to a field that is more and more visible. The journal is relatively closely bounded to Western Europe, which is an increasing tendency. Research limitations/implications The research is based on analyses of just three LIS journals. Practical implications Journal citation identity and the journal citation image indicators contribute in giving a more detailed multifaceted picture of a single journal. Originality/value The multiple set of indicators give rise to a journal evaluation of a more qualitative nature.

Abstract: This paper aims to examine technology developed to aid in e‐journal archiving and preservation. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines two organizations and relevant technology which has been developed over the last five years to meet the needs of e‐journal archiving and preservation. Findings This paper is exploratory in nature and examines two potential solutions for the e‐journal preservation dilemma. Practical implications Since the advent of e‐journal licensing, concerns regarding the preservation of digital born content have grown. The need to establish means to preserve this content for the future is acute. Originality/value This paper examines the pros and cons associated with the two primary organizations, Portico and LOCKSS, regarding e‐journal content preservation. It is hoped that this information will be useful to librarians and library staff who are responsible for exploring the means to implement digital preservation and will guide them to further resources which will be helpful in making an informed decision.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to empirically ascertain whether an ideological barrier to entry exists, preventing heterodox economists from publishing in mainstream journals. Design/methodology/approach The empirical results were obtained from a questionnaire asked of heterodox economists. The ten questions include where respondents submitted their research; their treatment by editors and referees; and whether an ideological barrier to publication exists. Findings The evidence overwhelmingly supports the existence of an ideological entry barrier. This barrier goes beyond the normal competitive nature of journal publishing, that is limited journal pages constricting the number of “good papers” that can be published, suggesting that there is an insidious ideological entry barrier preventing heterodox ideas from being published. Originality/value Based on this evidence, the last section proffers several research suggestions, including more sophisticated models predicting the likelihood of a heterodox economist submitting to a mainstream journal and the likelihood of acceptance. And, finally, several reforms are suggested including the adoption of a universal code of conduct for referees.

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to provide the scientific community with some quantitative data of relevance to the evaluation of two major citation databases. In addition, various aspects of the methodology of database coverage comparisons are discussed. Design/methodology/approach Calculations of the overlaps between the journal lists of Web of Science and Scopus and some other major scientific databases are presented. Findings The results provide some measures of the overall title coverage as well as the amount of unique material in the sources studied. Research limitations/implications The journal title overlap calculations are based on journal lists provided by the database producers rather than searches in the databases themselves. Any inaccuracies in the lists may be reflected in the results. Also, the lists do not provide any information about the depth and consistency of the coverage. The nature of possible error sources is discussed. Originality/value The methodology chosen allows comparatively quick comparisons between the contents of databases. This makes it suitable for analysis of trends in database coverage.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe selected journals in logistics management in terms of: the proportion of different “empirical” contributions; the proportion of national versus international research data; the geographical origin of research data; and the authors' geographical affiliations. Design/methodology/approach A sample of “top” scholarly journals in logistics management is selected on the basis of previous research, expert opinion and journal ranking lists. The selection includes the International Journal of Logistics Management ( IJLM ), the International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management ( IJPDLM ), and the Journal of Business Logistics ( JBL ). The research considers all available papers (a total of 657) published in these journals over an eight‐year period from 2000 to 2007. Findings The “empirical characteristics” and “geocentricity” were found to be variable across the studied journals in logistics management. Research limitations/implications The present research is limited to the “empirical characteristics” and “geocentricity” of “top” journals in logistics management. It provides opportunity for further research. Practical implications The present research provides valuable insights into the nature of academic publishing in the area of top journals of logistics management. The findings presented may be used by authors to direct their submissions to the proper journal. Originality/value Scholars will benefit from insights into the “empirical characteristics” and “geocentricity” of the “top” journals in logistics management. Specifically, scholars can note the particular features of individual journals. Further studies of the “empirical characteristics” and “geocentricity” of individual research journals are required in other related journals to the field of logistics management.

Abstract: This paper aims to reply to Dequech's comment in the International Journal of Social Economics on the analysis of the formation of conventional expectations under strong uncertainty, which was proposed in the present author's 2004 article in the International Journal of Social Economics. Design/methodology/approach The scope of this reply is to evaluate through a theoretical examination the validity of Dequech's claim contained in his comment that his initial analytical scheme of the state of expectations presented in his 1999 article was general enough to accommodate the psychological considerations, which were raised in the present author's 2004 article and which were associated with Keynes's analysis as well as with developments in the field of social psychology. Findings The paper demonstrates that both Dequech's initial article of the state of expectations and his subsequent comment on the present author's contribution on the conventional formation of expectations under strong uncertainty in the International Journal of Social Economics overlooked the psychological nature of the process of inferences, a fundamental factor in Keynes's discussion of the formation of conventional expectations. However, when social psychology considerations are introduced in the analysis (as it was the case with the present author's approach) and when the remarkable theoretical and empirical progress in the field of social psychology is taken into account, Dequech's claim of the generality of his framework is not justifiable because both the specific nature and the substantive impact of the social psychology issues associated with the role of inferences are overlooked across his analysis. It is proposed that a theoretical scheme that uses the wealth of evidence of contemporary social psychology is more promising for a rigorous development of a theory of expectations under strong uncertainty. Originality/value The paper sheds further light on expectancy theory.
