Description: Originating from East Asia, the perennial red macroalga Gracilaria vermiculophylla (Ohmi) Papenfuss has successfully invaded several temperate areas of the Northern hemisphere and continues to spread. In its new range, the seaweed tends to form local mass appearances and to dominate the native community. A high tolerance towards both abiotic and biotic environmental stressors could explain the invasion success of this species. I therefore compared the stress resistance of G. vermiculophylla from six native populations from South Korea and China and eight invasive populations from Europe and NW-Mexico. In short-term experiments G. vermiculophylla individuals were exposed to 1) heat shock, 2) UV-C-radiation and 3) elevated copper concentrations in the water. In a long-term experiment the seaweed had to cope with depletion stress (darkness in combination with low temperature and dryness) for several months. All experiments were carried out twice - one time in the native range in Qingdao, China and one time in the invaded range in Kiel, Germany - to rule out local acclimation effects. In order to compare the resistance against herbivory individuals of native and invasive G. vermiculophylla populations were fed to snails from the native (Littorina brevicula) and the invasive (Littorina littorea) range. In the Baltic Sea, G. vermiculophylla might threaten the habitat-forming native brown alga Fucus vesiculosus through direct competition for resources and by providing a shelter for mesograzers, which prefer to feed on F. vesiculosus. Mesocosm-experiments were conducted over one year in the Kiel Fjord in order to test the direct and indirect effects of G. vermiculophylla on F. vesiculosus.

Description: Coral reefs in Jakarta Bay have been subjected to scientific studies since the 1920s. Also from that time on biological collections were made. The reefs in the Jakarta Bay have been under long-term natural and anthropogenic stress. With the biological collections and historical documents the coral species richness in Jakarta Bay around 1920 was reconstructed. New data from this bay and the adjacent offshore Thousand Islands archipelago were obtained during a 2005 research expedition. A comparison of the coral assemblages between 1920 and 2005 reveals a clear decline in species numbers. The most prominent results include the near-shore disappearance of species belonging to the families Acroporidae, Milleporidae, and to a lesser extent Poritidae. The overall coral species composition of the reefs has changed considerably, which is partly reflected in a strong decline in coral species richness. About half the number of species recorded in 1920 was found again in 2005.

Description: In 1937/38 representative mollusc collections were made in Jakarta Bay (West Java, Indonesia). New data from here and the adjacent offshore Thousand Islands archipelago (Kepulauan Seribu) became available in 2005. Although collecting efforts and sampling methods differed, a comparison of the molluscan fauna of Jakarta Bay between 1937/38 and 2005 reveals a distinct deterioration. From 1937 to 2005, Jakarta Bay received increasing amounts of sewage from the greater Jakarta area, as well as increased sediment input from the deforested West Java hinterland. Predatory gastropods and numerous mollusc species associated with carbonate (reef) substrate have vanished from Jakarta Bay, among which many edible species.

Description: This book provides an up-to-date survey of the biodiversity\nof the Netherlands. The treatment of all taxonomic groups\nwhich occur in the Netherlands forms the core (chapter 5).\nAround 100 specialists contributed to this unique survey.\nThe other chapters highlight many aspects of the Dutch\nbiodiversity: natural history (chapter 2), research (chapter\n3), classification (chapter 4), patterns (chapter 7), trends\n(chapter 8), government policy (chapter 10) and nature\nmanagement (chapter 11). In this summary we focus on the\ntaxonomic treatments. They show that even a small and\ngeologically relatively young country such as the Netherlands,\nharbours an immense diversity in life forms.\n\n[...]
