    The proactive nature of employee voice: The facilitating role of supervisor developmental feedback

    Abstract: Drawing upon Parker, Bindl, and Strauss' [(2010). Making things happen: A model of proactive motivation. Journal of Management, 36(4), 827–856] model of proactive motivation, we provide an explanation for how employees who exhibit a high need for achievement can take a proactive initiative through the expression of voice. Importantly, the extent to which employee voice can bring about desired changes depends largely on how positively received the behavior is by those in higher positions, such as supervisors. In this regard, we further highlight the facilitating role of supervisor developmental feedback in shaping the effectiveness of voice behavior. Data from 392 independently matched subordinate–supervisor dyads from Japan provide empirical support for proposed relationships as follows: (a) there is a positive mediating relationship between the need for achievement, employee voice, and supervisors' evaluations of employee task performance and discretionary work effort, and (b) the mediating relationship becomes stronger when supervisor developmental feedback is high. Theoretical and practical implications are further discussed.

    Abstract: Investigations illustrate that the Internet of Things (IoT) can save costs, increase efficiency, improve quality, and provide data-driven preventative maintenance services. Intelligent sensors, dependable connectivity, and complete integration are essential for gathering real-time information. IoT develops home appliances for improved customer satisfaction, personalization, and enhanced big data analytics as a crucial Industry 4.0 enabler. Because the product design process is an important part of controlling manufacturing, there are constant attempts to improve and minimize product design time. Utilizing a hybrid algorithm, this research provides a novel method to schedule design products in production management systems to optimize energy usage and design time (combined particle optimization algorithm and shuffled frog leaping algorithm). The issue with particle optimization algorithms is that they might become stuck in local optimization and take a long time to converge to global optimization. The strength of the combined frog leaping algorithm local searching has been exploited to solve these difficulties. The MATLAB programming tool is used to simulate the suggested technique. The simulation findings were examined from three perspectives: energy usage, manufacturing time, and product design time. According to the findings, the recommended strategy performed better in minimizing energy use and product design time. These findings also suggest that the proposed strategy has a higher degree of convergence when discovering optimal solutions.

    Abstract: A management framework (like the Business Model Canvas or SWOT) is a combination of interlinked items that support a particular approach to a specific objective. Various management frameworks are widely used even though their origins, adoption, and value remain vague. Previous research tried to decipher the adoption of these management frameworks, whereas considerably less attention was devoted to the theoretical explanation of the development and value of the frameworks. This paper investigates the nature of management frameworks in particular realms using analogical reasoning between biological and social systems, and mostly draws on memetics, intersubjective reality, and the network effect. By using memetics, the explanations on the origins of well-known frameworks are complemented. Second, the paper shows the role of the network effect in the growing value of a framework until it becomes an intersubjective reality. Finally, such a framework is explained as autopoietic within a particular realm.

    On the nature of apical vowel in Jixi-Hui Chinese: Acoustic and articulatory data

    Abstract: Chinese languages have a set of segments known as apical vowels, which have been analysed in previous studies as either genuine vowels, fricative vowels, fricative consonants, or approximants. This study is concerned with the apical vowel attested in Jixi-Hui Chinese. We examine this segment from acoustic and articulatory perspectives and argue that it is best defined as a fricative /z/. Phonologically, Jixi-Hui Chinese /z/ is a distinct phoneme that is exclusively attested in syllable nucleus position where it constitutes a tone-bearing unit and which can undergo tonal sandhi processes. It can appear not only after coronal sibilants /s ts tsʰ/, but also after bilabials /p pʰ/ and nasals /m n/. Acoustically, we show that this segment contains frication noise in its initial phase in the majority of cases, with a formant structure towards its end. The analysis of the zero-crossing rate confirms this significant presence of noise, clearly distinguishing this segment from genuine vowels. Furthermore, articulatory analyses of ultrasound data show that /z/ has a near-identical tongue shape to fricative /s/ on both mid-sagittal and coronal planes, in both sibilant and non-sibilant contexts. These findings are viewed in light of the variability in the way /z/ is phonetically implemented in Jixi-Hui Chinese.

    The prevalence and nature of COLAs in public sector retirement plans

    Abstract: State and local employees comprise a significant proportion of the workforce and are largely covered by defined benefit pensions. Many of these retirement plans have been facing funding gaps, but legal restrictions often prevent them from reducing benefits for current employees. However, retirement plans can reduce liabilities by changing cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs, which are commonly applied to benefits each year to allow retirees to maintain purchasing power in retirement. In this study, we examine the prevalence of COLAs in public sector retirement plans through original data collection for 49 plans in 30 states, which cover approximately 52% of public sector workers overall. Among these samples, on average 45% of workers each year experienced some change in COLAs between 2005 and 2018, with more than half of these workers experiencing negative changes. We consider stylized examples of public sector workers subject to reductions in COLAs to understand how COLAs may affect workers’ retirement decisions. Our analysis suggests that eliminating a 3% COLA could delay retirement of affected workers by approximately 4.5 months.

    Abstract: The mainstream studies of the East Asian tributary system have been exhibiting a stance that tends to stress the importance of Confucianism in forming and sustaining the tributary system throughout its long history. However, there are still several questions (especially those of a theoretical nature) that historians have yet to answer: How could Confucianism have contributed to the formation and sustenance of this tributary system? Why could this Confucian-based tributary system be recognized and employed in relations with non-Confucian frontier tribes? Why could this system have worked with both the nomadic tribes on the northern frontier and the South-East Asian countries that were neither Confucian nor nomadic? Drawing on the results of ritual studies in anthropology, Chinese historiography and Chinese philosophy, this author seeks a broader methodology that can be used to conceptualize the tributary ritual and its constitutive power structure, which forms the foundation of the central part of the East Asian world order. This paper is a theoretical attempt to find a non-Sinocentric way to interpret the formally Sinocentric tribute system in premodern East Asia.

    Abstract: This article examines the ways the Lambeth Conference resolutions discuss children and youth. It is a contribution to the work of identifying historical Anglican theological perspectives on children. Opening with a brief definition and review of theologies of childhood, it then presents chronologically (1857–1998) and briefly analyzes the resolutions which name ‘children’ or ‘youth’; it closes with an analysis of how the Lambeth resolutions map onto three basic claims shared by the reviewed theologies of childhood.

    Abstract: With the expanding adoption of technology and intelligent applications in every aspect of our life, energy, resource, data, and product management are all improving. So, modern management has recently surged to cope with modern societies. Numerous optimization approaches and algorithms are used to effectively optimize the literature while taking into account its many restrictions. With their dependability and superior solution quality for overcoming the numerous barriers to generation, distribution, integration, and management, nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithms have stood out among these methods. Hence, this article aims to review the application of nature-inspired optimization algorithms to modern management. Besides, the created clusters introduce the top authors in this field. The results showed that nature-inspired optimization algorithms contribute significantly to cost, resource, and energy efficiency. The genetic algorithm is also the most important and widely used method in the previous literature.
