Abstract:
Two nonprofit publishers of prominent journals have debuted new ways to support open access journals without shifting the cost entirely to authors. One approach, called Subscribe to Open and implemented this week by Annual Reviews, would transform the nature of subscriptions, making journal articles immediately free to read if a critical mass of paying institutions continues to subscribe each year. In contrast, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is offering the institutions that publish the most papers in its 59 journals to pay for unlimited publishing in them plus reading access; ACM says the package deals will cost more than existing subscriptions but less than offers from other publishers that charge a fee for each paper published.
