    Pledge for a transformative science : a conceptual framework (2016)

    Description: "Transformative science" is a concept that delineates the new role of science for knowledge societies in the age of reflexive modernity. The paper develops the program of a transformative science, which goes beyond observing and analyzing societal transformations, but rather takes an active role in initiating and catalyzing change processes. The aim of transformative science is to achieve a deeper understanding of ongoing transformations and increased societal capacity for reflexivity with regard to these fundamental change processes. The concept of transformative science is grounded in an experimental paradigm, which has implications for (1) research, (2) education and learning, and (3) institutional structures and change in the science system. The article develops the theoretical foundations of the concept of transformative science and spells out the concrete implications in these three dimensions.

    Understanding and assessing the societal impact of sustainability research : from state of the art to a process-oriented assessment plan ; with the case study of the Wuppertal Institute in Germany (2016)

    Description: Sustainability research builds upon its mutual relationship with the society to find futureoriented solutions to deal with societal challenges. In other words, it is a matter of research to produce societal impact. Furthermore, funders and researchers themselves increasingly desire for accountability, to show if societal impact is achieved. To deal with that, two adaptive questions have to be answered: How can societal impact be understood or defined? And what can be learned from theoretical and methodological approaches, as well as practical examples? Built on the answers through a comprehensive literature review and expert interviews, the third question is asked: How can the assessment of societal impact of sustainability-oriented Projects look in practice? The result is the development of a holistic framework on the project-level and its operationalization. It was tested on three cases of the Wuppertal Institute, which has the mission to be a pulse generator for a sustainable societal transformation. The results show that the tool is implementable and a start of an assessment series. Nevertheless, the lack of consensus about the theoretical background influences the design of practical applications. One significant development is the focus shift of the assessment towards the project process and its productive interactions. This enables to collect data about whether societal impact is produced, but also how. The results suggest that clear assessment boundaries are required to deal with uncontrollable externalities. Furthermore, a practical question of the thesis is, if the integration of directly involved stakeholders into the assessment provide an added value. This can be answered positively. But it should be also observed that financial and human resources are key challenges about the extent, as well as the processing of the results. The analysis indicates that to assess societal impact is a suitable instrument and a key step to deal with societal challenges. The developed holistic framework and its operationalization can be used to inspire future research.

    Description: Sustainable development is the 21st Century's wicked problem. After 40 years into this agenda have reversed only few unsustainable trends we hear the call for a paradigm shift, transformation, radical change or system innovations in order to finally change course. But what does this actually mean? And how do we put it into practice? This book describes the path ahead. It combines system transformation research with political economy and change leadership insights when discussing the need for a great mindshift in how human wellbeing, economic prosperity and healthy ecosystems are understood if the Great Transformations ahead are to lead to more sustainability. It shows that history is made by purposefully acting humans and introduces transformative literacy as a key skill in leading the radical incremental change strategies that wicked problems require, illustrating their nature through mapping pioneering practices and their commonalities.

    The dilemma of incumbents in sustainability transitions : a narrative approach (2016)

    Description: In the context of the larger sustainability discourse, "sufficiency" is beginning to emerge as a new value throughout Western societies, and the question asked in this article is: Can we observe and conceptually identify opportunities to link successful business strategies of incumbents to principles of sufficiency? Thus, how feasible is sustainable entrepreneurship for incumbents? In this paper, a conceptual approach is developed combining insights from sociology, transition research, management and sustainable entrepreneurship research with a focus on narratives as a translation mechanism in situations where tensions emerge between corporate narratives and unexpected societal trends, e.g., the emergence of sufficient lifestyles. It will be shown that even though these are still a niche phenomenon, a focus on corporate narratives is an important element in understanding the role of incumbents in transitions to sustainability.

    Learning through evaluation : a tentative evaluative scheme for sustainability transition experiments (2016)

    Description: Transitions towards sustainability are urgently needed to address the interconnected challenges of economic development, ecological integrity, and social justice, from local to global scales. Around the world, collaborative science-society initiatives are forming to conduct experiments in support of sustainability transitions. Such experiments, if carefully designed, provide significant learning opportunities for making progress on transition efforts. Yet, there is no broadly applicable evaluative scheme available to capture this critical information across a large number of cases, and to guide the design of transition experiments. To address this gap, the article develops such a scheme, in a tentative form, drawing on evaluative research and sustainability transitions scholarship, alongside insights from empirical cases. We critically discuss the scheme's key features of being generic, comprehensive, operational, and formative. Furthermore, we invite scholars and practitioners to apply, reflect and further develop the proposed tentative scheme - making evaluation and experiments objects of learning.

Transparenz, Reflexivität, Werbebezug, Partizipation und Umgestaltung von Forschung und Lehre - das sind nach Ansicht der Autor(inn)en die fünf Bedingungen, welche eine transformative Wirtschaftswissenschaft genügen muss. Der Artikel dient als Denk- und Diskussionsanstoß innerhalb der Wirtschaftswissenschaften sowie auch zwischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft und jenen außenwissenschaftlichen Akteuren, die in gesellschaftlicher und ökonomischer Transformation in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit engagiert sind. Die Spiekerrooger Klimagespräche 2016 werden darauf aufbauen.

    Description: Im Zuge der Energiewende steht die Industrie in NRW vor der substantiellen Herausforderung großer infrastruktureller Veränderungen. Dies bezieht sich auf den Energiebedarf, die Treibhausgasemissionen und den allgemeinen Ressourcenbedarf. Hierzu ist ein Zusammenspiel der industriellen mit den öffentlichen Akteuren vonnöten. Dies umfasst neben politischer Unterstützung und dem Nutzen von Marktmechanismen ist auch Regulierung, um diese Transformation zu unterstützen und voranzubringen. Die Steuerbarkeit solcher Prozesse hängt jedoch auch stark davon ab, in welchem Umfang die entlang der oftmals komplexen Wertschöpfungsketten ablaufenden industriellen Prozesse innerhalb NRWs angesiedelt sind. Hierzu muss neben dem technischen und wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten einer solchen Veränderung der Grad der Geschlossenheit der entsprechenden Wertschöpfungsketten betrachtet werden. Hierzu werden hier exemplarisch drei Wertschöpfungsketten betrachtet: Eisen- und Stahlproduktion, Chemie mit dem Fokus auf polymere Faserverbundwerkstoffe, und der Anlagenbau für die erneuerbare Energiewirtschaft. Diese wurden so ausgewählt, dass sie sowohl eine große strategische, wirtschaftliche bzw. seitens des Energiebedarfs und der Treibhausgasemissionen quantitative Relevanz für die Energiewende speziell in NRW haben, als auch unterschiedliche Arten der äußeren Anbindung, der internationalen Konkurrenz und der internen Governancestruktur aufweisen. Alle drei betrachteten Wertschöpfungsketten weisen eine ungenügende Geschlossenheit auf. Dies impliziert die Notwendigkeit einer Einbindung weiterer Regionen und höherer politischer Ebenen in den Transformationsprozess. NRW kann somit als eine Schlüsselregion verstanden werden, die zum Gelingen der Energiewende entscheidende Beiträge leisten kann - jedoch ist eine enge Kooperation mit weiteren deutschen Bundesländern wie auch den umgebenden Industrieregionen des europäischen Auslands notwendig.

    Description: Der Endbericht stellt die Ergebnisse des Projekts "Energiesuffizienz - Strategien und Instrumente für eine technische, systemische und kulturelle Transformation zur nachhaltigen Begrenzung des Energiebedarfs im Konsumfeld Bauen/Wohnen" dar. In dem Projekt wurde untersucht, wie energiesuffiziente Alltagsroutinen, soziale Praktiken und Lebensstilaspekte mit den sozialen und ökologischen Anforderungen an eine nachhaltige Entwicklung in Einklang gebracht werden können und wie die strukturellen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen gestaltet werden müssen, so dass Energiesuffizienz im Alltag akzeptabler und praktikabler wird. Für die drei prinzipiellen Energiesuffizienz-Ansätze Reduktion, Substitution und Anpassung wurden Reduktionspotenziale für den Haushaltsstromverbrauch quantifiziert. Für ausgewählte Anwendungsfelder wurden die Ergebnisse in Form von Suffizienzspektren dargestellt. Anschließend wurden Politikansätze zur Unterstützung von Energiesuffizienz in Privathaushalten analysiert und Vorschläge für ein integriertes Paket von Politikinstrumenten für Energieeffizienz und -suffizienz entwickelt. Die Erkenntnisse des Projektes sind unter anderem in einen internetbasierten Haushalts-Strom-Check, in ein Handbuch zur nachhaltigen Produktgestaltung für die Geräteindustrie und in die Entwicklung von Vorschlägen für nationale und EU-Instrumente zur Reduktion des Stromverbrauchs und zur Förderung des kommunalen Klimaschutzes eingeflossen.
