    Death, New Land, and New Nature in Dostoevsky’s Novel The Idiot

    Abstract: The article is dedicated to the analysis of the main concepts in the novel The Idiot aimed at a better understanding of its most enigmatic scenes. The main word of the novel is “new”, both on a plot level and on a deeper, ontological one. The novel vividly demonstrates how the manifestation of the “new” is actually connected with emotions that are very different from the ones we could suppose by default; in fact, it is connected with fear, disgust, a sense of disruption and destruction, radical transition, and unknown. Dostoevsky shows how this kind of human relationship with the “new” is an effective way to enclose man in the narrow prison of earthly life, denying immortality and resurrection; it also encloses man in the narrow prison of social prejudices, denying the possibility for free growth of his humanity. The analysis focuses on the first scene at the Epanchyns’, the story about the soldier Kolpakov (the only thing we know about the father of the prince), and Ippolit’s dream about the non-scorpion and the Newfoundland dog Norma.

    The Memory of the First World War and the Key Problems of the French Foreign Policy during the Inter-war Period in the Reflection of the Journal “La Revue des Vivants”.

    Abstract: The article analyses the French journal “La Revue des Vivants” (1927–1935) as a source of studying the history of the Inter-war period. This journal, created by the veterans of the First World War, who at the same time represented the French intellectual elites, presents a unique combination of their war experience and current political agenda. The author examines three main subjects that characterized the political and social orientation of this journal. Firstly, its publishers and authors were deeply influenced by the First World War and its consequences. Its experience forced them to seek a better international system, where the repeat of such conflict would be impossible. This leads to the second subject, the European integration and the frame it was supposed to set. The idea of the united Europe was connected with the third subject, the relations with Germany, which could be successful only as a part of an international organization. The analysis of all these subjects brings a contradictory conclusion: despite all progressive and forward-thinking ideas of this journal, its publishers and authors failed to understand some important tendencies of their time (for example, the nature and the origins of the national socialism). However, this conclusion only confirms the nature of the Inter-war period as a time of many different ideologies and ideas and opens new perspectives of its studying.

    Abstract: The materials here proposed have been prepared for the 150th birth anniversary of the of two outstanding Russian philosophers: the idealist and criticist I.I. Lapshin and the religious metaphysician and intuitionist N.O. Lossky. The materials reveal a little-known episode of reception of their work in the magazine “Der russische Gedanke”, published in Czechoslovakia between 1929 and 1931. The first piece is an introductory note about the journal Der russische Gedanke and its founder and editor, B.V. Yakovenko. The author emphasizes the continuity of B.V. Yakovenko's thought with the main idea of “Logos – International Journal of Cultural Philosophy”. Аnother part of the materials are a number of articles by B.V. Yakovenko, written in 1930 for the 60th birth anniversary of I.I. Lapshin and N.O. Lossky. The third and largest part of this work is a collection of four book reviews written by N.O. Lossky and published in European publishing houses, and four reviews written again by N.O. Lossky on the work of his colleagues. Their content shows the respectful nature of the professional relationship between the Russian philosophers.

    Abstract: The article reconstructs the relations between two contemporaries, two classics of Russian culture – Alexander Ostrovsky and Fyodor Dostoevsky. The relations are considered in the dynamics of their development. Despite the fact that contemporaries of Ostrovsky and Dostoevsky noted the playwright’s critical perception of Dostoevsky’s work, the emphasis is placed on the friendly nature of their relationship, the proximity of their aesthetic views, and the commonality of their creative framework. The article stresses that the proximity of their aesthetic views on artistic creativity will become the basis for Ostrovsky’s cooperation with the Dostoevsky brothers’ journal “Vremya” (Time). The research undertaken here analyzes the reasons for the termination of this cooperation and the nature of further relations between Ostrovsky and Dostoevsky, their mutual assessment of each other’s creativity. As a result, it is noted that although Dostoevsky did not enter Ostrovsky’s inner circle, in his plays the playwright addressed the issues that worried both of them.

(№ 18). «The Journal for the Study of the Old Testament» is one of the leading scientific journals in biblical studies. In this bibliographic review we will consider all the publications of the journal, contained in issues from № 15 to 18; all these 4 issues came out in 1980. Especially the interesting articles should be marked on the following topics: book of Enoch, features of biblical etymologies, historical nature of the Joseph and Moses narratives (№ 15), Brevard Childs, canonical approach (№ 16), function of Psalms, eschatology in the Book of Daniel: analysis of some episodes of the Song of Songs, the beautiful and the barren in biblical type-scenes (№ 17), a convergence in recent Old Testament theologies, role of biblical research, Aramaic in the Bible, politics of security of the king Solomon, ancient narrative stratum about the king Saul in 1 Samuel (№ 18).

    Abstract: The popularity of the use of the quartile index in various fields of knowledge is shown, the first mention of which dates back to the work of R. Kempton and L. Taylor on population biology, published in 1976 in the journal Nature. For the first time for scientometrics, this index was proposed in 2019 by the historian A.V. Grinev from St. Petersburg. A number of improvements have been made to this index for the purpose of monitoring and evaluating the qualitative structure of publications by authors and any subjects of publication activity. It shows its significant advantage over Hirsch-like metrics and gives recommendations for its implementation in national and institutional systems for assessing the quality of publication activity.

    Abstract: The paper is devoted to substantiating the requirements that make sense to present to the journal articles manuscripts’ peer reviews in order to reduce the reviewers’ efforts without reducing the reviews quality. For this, the role of peer review in scientific communication is characterized, and the changes that have occurred in scientific communication over the past two decades are analyzed, including the emergence of open access journals and its consequences: mega-journals and predatory journals. An assessment of the new model of peer review in mega-journals is given, which reduces the efforts of reviewers, but also reduces the level of trust in the articles published in them. The twofold function of peer reviewing is analyzed: social, which resolves the problem to support the scientific knowledge growth, and facilitates the scientists’ orientation in journal publications, and private, which increases the publishers’ competitive advantages in the scientific publications market. It is proposed to separate these functions, leaving traditionally voluntary reviews only for social function, and transferring private to the category of fee-based services: the journal’s editor(publisher) can order to reviewer same recommendation for author on paper’s improving. A description of the new requirements for peer reviews is given, in which only the scientific nature of the article, the author’s professional competence, and the novelty of the research results obtained should be analyzed.

    Abstract: The editorial board brings to your attention a reprint of the article by S.G.Kara-Murza, published in 1981. The author personally met and debated with the creator of the Science Citation Index Eugene Garfield: recognizing the importance of bibliometry for science studies, Sergey Georgievich defends the inadmissibility of using citation indexes to evaluate the scientific contribution of individual researchers and scientific organizations. It would require the fulfillment of a number of unrealizable conditions in practice so that the citation could not distort the scientific contribution. After four decades since the publication of the article, it must be recognized that the relevance of the problem has not exhausted itself. Measuring the effectiveness of scientists by formal quantitative parameters has taken root to the status of official for scientific reports, aggravated by the prioritization of journal articles in comparison with fundamental monographic works. Arguments have repeatedly been heard in the scientific community explaining the problematic nature of objective indicators for assessing the productivity and scientific significance and scientific potential of scientists, especially in the field of socio-humanitarian knowledge. The discussion on the introduction of quantitative methods for evaluating the effectiveness of scientists' work continues. In this regard, the editorial board of the journal considers it appropriate to invite our readers to familiarize themselves with the point of view set forth in the publication of the famous scientist S.G.Kara-Murza 40 years ago.
