Abstract:
The general information, as well as the field and laboratory data relating to the remnants of high terraces of the Lower Meuse in Belgium are presented in the article preceding this one in this volume of the journal. On these bases, we present here an original and argued model. It shows that previous models are based on elevation data that are often largely imprecise, or even non-existent for certain remnant. For each model we show that: (1) the terraces which are reconstituted do not generally pass through the existing gravel; (2) the latest work of synthesis on the subject, which by tradition is authoritative, is particularly unsuited to concrete data. A sedimentological study of all the gravels provides original information on the stratigraphic evolution of grain size and nature of pebbles, roundness and facies of quartz, as well as the association of dense transparent minerals.
