Abstract: The article analyzes a little-known episode in the history of Russian philosophy – the polemic of the editor of the journal “Questions of Philosophy and Psychology” N.Ya. Grot and the outstanding publicist of the conservative newspaper “Moskovskie Vedomosti” Yu.N. Govorukha-a boy who spoke under the pseudonym Yu. Nikolaev. The controversy took place in the first year of the magazine’s existence, when the principle and direction of the editorial policy were determined. Yu.N. Govorukha-Otrok, sharing together with N.Ya. Grotto hope that the journal will lead to the formation of Russian national philosophy, insisted on the conscious circulation of the publication to the Slavophile tradition, defining the end goal of philosophical search for the creation of the Orthodox metaphysics meet the needs of aboriginal people's lives. His opponent, N.Ya. Grot, was a typical representative of the liberalism of the 80s of the XIX century, which was undecided in its socio-political preferences. Being a neophyte of metaphysics, the editor of “Questions” proceeded from an understanding of the rational nature of philosophical knowledge and justified the variety of directions of philosophical searches. He gave the pages of his magazine to the positivist authors from the liberal populist camp, which was completely unacceptable to his opponent. Thus, the circumstances of public life complicated the nature of the polemic on the issues of theoretical content and introduced social-evaluative judgments into it. Talker-Boy considered the polemic as an episode of the world-historical struggle of Christianity with the eudaemonistic idea of progress. The article claims that the subsequent development of Russian philosophy in the early twentieth century confirmed the correctness of the editorial line of the journal.

Abstract: Earlier, the journal Voprosy Filosofii (2018, No. 10) already published some excerpts from the previously unknown, newly identified draft book by A.F. Losev “Philosophy of the Name” (1927). As follows from archival data, the author in the early 1920s planned to deploy an extensive theoretical part called “On the dialectical nature of the name” (24 paragraphs), which, as a result, was not included in the book. For this publication, the initial part of paragraph is chosen, in the general plan of the book called “Dialectics of Foreign Affairs from Above”. The passage is of undeniable interest to the philosophy historian, at least by the virtuosity with which A.F. Losev demonstrates the possibilities of building a synthetic “dialectic name”, combining several structural-typological approaches: the famous constructions of Plato’s dialogue “Parmenides” (eight “unity”), neoplatonic “quatrains” or tetractids (One, One existing, Formation, Becoming) and Hegelian triads (Inside-yourself, For-yourself, In-yourself-and-for-yourself)

Abstract: The journal continues to publish translations of individual chapters of the book by the famous phenomenologist Michael Marder "Plants of Philosophers (Intellectual Herbarium)". Out of twelve stories, "Irigaray’s Water Lily" was chosen. The author analyzes the views of a modern French philosopher Luce Irigaray, whose numerous books contain a feminist revision of traditional philosophy and its language. Today, having thrown off the straitjacket of metaphysical reasoning, living thought turns to physicality, marked by finiteness and sexual differences, as well as to the surrounding world, to the rhythms of the earth and the richness of non-Western philosophical traditions. Luce Irigaray's creativity is rooted in all those dimensions of experience that she was able to restore at the sunset of metaphysics. In the work of Irigaray, the vegetable occupies a special place and stimulates the development of her thoughts. Plants provide her with a model of thinking, living and cultivating subjectivity. Cultivation in this case does not mean the formation of the physis in accordance with the predetermined parameters of the mind or the forcible eradication of what grows by itself. On the contrary, cultivating nature, for example, means that we put ourselves at her service, protecting, participating and encouraging myriad plants. Irigaray calls us to listen to the muted vegetative rhythms of our life and thinking, whose growth has been stopped by the prejudices of metaphysics and the arrhythmia of modern existence. Everything that Western philosophers from Aristotle to Hegel rejected and devalued in relation to plants, in her works is lovingly extracted, overestimated and cultivated.

Abstract: The journal continues to publish translations of chapters of the book by the famous phenomenologist Michael Marder “The Philosopher’s Plants (An Intellectual Herbarium)”. Two of the twelve stories were chosen — “Aristotle's Wheat” and “Avicenna's Celery”. The author analyzes the views of the ancient philosopher Aristotle and the medieval Persian philosopher and physician Ibn Sina (Avicenna) on the nature of plants and their place in the diverse world of living beings, showing how the images of wheat and celery become an important part of their philosophical reflections. Marder emphasizes that the ancient scientists were alien to modern systems of biological classification. Each creation occupied its own niche and existed for a specific purpose. However, the contours of these teleologies were not at all what we imagine them to be. For example, for Aristotle, a noble man, a noble animal and a noble plant had more in common than two representatives of the same biological kingdom. In addition, the boundaries between them were quite shaky. A stupid person, unable to follow the strict principles of logic, was literally like a plant. Avicenna discovers in plants the “vegetable soul”, above which he puts the “animal soul”. He finds both of these levels in a person. Awareness of this totality is necessary, according to Avicenna, for genuine self-knowledge and, consequently, for the knowledge of God. The author of the book attempts to answer the question: what if the mixture of similar beings passing into and out of each other, characteristic of the ancient and medieval world, is not a fantastic fiction, but an insightful description of our transgenic present and future?

Abstract: The article examines the project-oriented potential of the conceptual direction “Innovative paradigm of applied ethics”, which was formed in Russia in the second half of the XX and early XXI centuries. The basis of this direction is formed by theoretical ethical knowledge, project-oriented knowledge for the purposeful transformation of “small systems”, phronesis (that is the ability to understand and interpret the situation at hand and decide about appropriate actions). The main issue under discussion is the relevance of the project-oriented potential of applied ethics in the knowledge of modern situations of moral choice. The experience of applying the project-oriented potential of the innovative paradigm of applied ethics in the context of the transformation of a Russian university is analyzed. Experience, which is presented on the pages of the journal “Semestrial Papers Applied Ethics”. The dynamics of the features of the application of ethical and applied knowledge to the study of changing situations is fixed: theoretical comprehension of new situations of moral choice; recognition of choice alternatives; project-oriented impact on the value-normative system; humanitarian examination of the conflict interaction of value systems. It is concluded that the mission of the innovative paradigm of applied ethics from the point of view of its project-oriented potential is feasible when applied to situations of uncertainty in moral choice, when there is a request from the acting subject for humanitarian expertise, consulting and project activities. In the absence of a situation of moral choice, with a decrease in the possibility of self-determination of the acting subject, and a reduction in the sphere of his responsibility, the mission of the innovative paradigm of applied ethics is hardly feasible. At the same time, the nature of ethical issues in a changing society indicates a potential demand for project-oriented potential of applied ethics in the near future.
