Abstract: This special issue of Nordic Journal of Linguistics is dedicated to diachronic generative syntax in the North Germanic languages. With the introduction of generative grammar in the late 1950s the historical perspective became less prominent within linguistics. Instead, contemporary language, normally represented by the researcher’s own intuitions, became the unmarked empirical basis within the generative field, although there were some early pioneering studies in generative historical syntax (e.g. Traugott 1972). It was not until the introduction of the Principles and Parameters theory in the 1990s that diachronic syntax emerged as an important domain of inquiry for generative linguists. Since then, the study of syntactic change has added a temporal dimension to the overall enterprise to better understand the nature of variation in human language.

Abstract: The article presents a fragment of research on univerbation in its relation to text integrity. The study is fulfilled on the material of the modern German language. Univerbation is considered as formation of root compounds and synthetic compounds. The study material includes 120 word-formation contexts selected from modern German press, fiction and legislative acts of the FRG taken from criminal, civil and public codes. The article focuses on the problem of cataphoric univerbation widely spread in press texts and law acts. The highest frequency of compounds with cataphorically oriented intratext links is detected in newspaper and journal headlines and titles of law articles. From pragmatic point of view polylexemic univerbs function in the titles of law articles as terminological condensates and as segmentation markers of the whole law text. In press headlines one of the main reasons of univerb creation and its use is compacting. The pragmatic focus on compacting is successfully manifested also in the titles of law articles. However, in contrast to press it has not a coherent, but a strongly marked cohesive nature. Showy, memorable, unusual headline univerbs can also stimulate the interest to read the main text. The existence of subheading or overheading alongside with the main headline is typical of some newspaper and journal articles. Due to this fact the content- and information-related support among univerbs is provided. In speech reality a high degree of language economy in the univerb structure results in lexical redundancy which is to guarantee the correct decoding of the condensate’s semantics.

Abstract: The article is a reply to three reviews of my book Willensfreiheit (Berlin/New York 2007) which were published in a previous issue of this journal. In the book, I develop a libertarian account of free will that invokes neither uncaused events nor mind-body dualism nor agent causality. Against Bettina Walde's criticism, I argue that a well-balanced libertarianism can evade the luck objection and that it should not be portrayed as positing tiny causal gaps in an otherwise deterministic world. Against Marcus Willaschek's Moorean compatibilism, I argue that our ordinary notion of agency commits us to genuine two-way abilities, i. e. to abilities to do otherwise given the same past and laws of nature. Against Christoph Jäger's defence of van Inwagen's consequence argument, I insist that this argument for incompatibilism is seriously flawed and that libertarians are well-advised not to base their position upon it.

Abstract: The article presents a promising area of modern Germanic studies actively introduced by the Department of German Philology of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, i.e. linguo-literary studies. Based on the extensive scholarly experience of the Department, the feasibility and fruitfulness of linguo-literary studies as an interdisciplinary area of contemporary philology is proven. Because the two philological disciplines are closely related, it is argued that their interaction is vital, at the least in the problematic complexes that deal with texts, writing and discourse. The research topic is justified with the help of relative German-language academic discourse, which confirms the overt trend of shortening the distance between modern linguistics and literary studies. Literary texts and literary language are essential elements of mutual academic consideration of the two disciplines. The links between linguistics and literary studies are showcased from a scholarly and historical perspective. Particular attention is paid to the 1960s-1970s as a period of mutual convergence of the two philological disciplines under the umbrella of linguo-literary studies. The key theoretical provisions used are those expressed by Roman Jakobson in his Linguistics and Poetics (1960). Among the functions of language, the scholar singles out “poetic function” and discusses literary use of language using linguistic terms as it is preconditioned by linguistic structures. It is emphasized that the integration of closely related disciplines is justified and ensured by the academic course “Belles-lettres”. Despite all of the interaction challenges, both disciplines work with texts and must consider their linguistic nature. Using the example of the academic discussion presented in the Literary Studies and Linguistics journal and given the activities of the Literaturlinguistik Internet platform and some recent academic papers, new directions of linguo-literary studies are set forth. In this context, the cooperation of the two philological disciplines at the Department of German Philology appears particularly promising.
