Description: Present day multibeam echo sounder systems have the capability to record, display, and log backscattered signals from the water column (WCI = water column imaging) in addition to the echoes from the seafloor. This extra information can deliver interest-ing insights into marine life in the upper water layers but it produces a huge amount of data which requires tremendous time and effort for processing and interpretation. To tackle this, a semi-automated approach has been developed which is based on the conversion of the data into images and applying available image processing tech-niques. That way the WCI data acquired during eight expeditions in the Indian Ocean had been processed and the relative biomass abundance along an extended North-South profile had been determined. In addition, the WCI data displayed interesting observations of the diurnal migration of zooplankton and revealed an amazing cor-relation to nocturnal illumination.

Description: Echo sounder systems represent powerful tools not only to determine the seafloor depth, but also to investigate the water column. The most prominent fields of hydro acoustic water column applications include fish shoal detection and biomass assessments, target detection for military purposes, oil and gas leakage detection, and suspension matter analyses. Multibeam echo sounder systems (MBES) – so far primarily used for bathymetric measurements – are introduced in this study for demonstrating their water column analyses capabilities that become more and more available due to most recent computer power and mass storage advances. Some environmental data are presented in this study showing gas release from the seabed, fish shoals, zooplankton and oceanographic layers to highlight multibeam water column potentials. Moreover multibeam water column assessments are suggested to be valuable for the hydrographer as a supporting tool potentially useful for mitigating MBES survey related conflicts.

Description: Stick charts are a significant part of the Micronesian Marshallese navigation tradition in the Pacific Ocean. The islanders navigated without instruments just by observing, among others, oceanic phenomena such as swells, currents, and roughness characteristics of the sea surface. For a long time, the explanation of the various sticks of such latticework remained secret and something of a mystery and was only obtained by oral transmission under great difficulties. Old and new interpretations of stick charts are compared and presented. Signatures of different swells manifested on stick charts were identified and proved by satellite remote sensing data. Current research on indigenous navigation is growing to conserve such unique tradition in the Pacific and especially in the sea area of the Marshall Islands. For scientific research on indigenous navigation knowledge collaboration between natural scientists and ethnologists is necessary.
