Abstract

Buffered solutions of various preparations of calves thymus and salmon sperm resp. were investigated by optical and rheological methods. The fine structure of measuredP(θ)-light scattering functions was interpreted as being caused by large supermolecular particles in solution. These could be analysed by use of theRayleigh-Gans-theory and were found to have low density and to be very sensitive against temperature and shear. Number and size of supermolecular particles inDNA-solutions increase steadily when the solutions are allowed to rest for some days.
