Do Lions Panthera leo Actively Select Prey or Do Prey Preferences Simply Reflect Chance Responses via Evolutionary Adaptations to Optimal Foraging?

Figure 1

Variation in selectivity (Jacobs' index) for encounters with moving lions, hunts by lions, and kills by lions for the eight most abundant potential prey species in Addo Elephant National Park from December 2003 until November 2005.

Overall Jacobs' index values for each species come from the published literature [1]. Jacobs' index values for each species in Addo were calculated using the mean abundance and total number of kills recorded.
