Abstract
This commentary discusses the structure and function of the MoFe-protein of nitrogenase. The aim is to help the reader appreciate the ways in which the biomimetic and theoretical chemistry described in the four following commentaries contribute to understanding how protons, dinitrogen, substrate analogues and inhibitors are bound and subsequently reduced at the metal clusters present in nitrogenase.
