Summary
-
1.
Sera from children were examined for antibodies against parainfluenza viruses, types 1, 2 and 3 and against mumps virus. The findings suggest that these are common infecting agents of British children.
-
2.
The proportion of children possessing antibodies increased with age and antibodies against the individual viruses were acquired at different ages. After the initial development of antibody the mean level did not rise further during childhood.
-
3.
At an age when most children had acquired antibody against more than one of these viruses a correlation between the levels of antibody was usually demonstrated. The significance of these findings in relation to the epidemiology and antigenic behaviour of the parainfluenza viruses is discussed.
