Summary

Long records of pressure and wind data along the NW Italian coast are used to investigate the most relevant space and time scales influencing the marine dynamics of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, in the N. Eastern part of the W. Mediterranean Sea. Both parameters indicate that some basic oscillations (20, 6–8, 4 and 2–3 days) affect the atmosphere of the two basins. From the spatial structure analysis a general system for the whole Ligurian-Tyrrhenian basin and a more local system fitting the cyclonic circulation of the Ligurian Sea are emphasized. The reliability of the evidenced structures and their spatial coherence constitute an indication that, for time scales longer than a few days, the meteorological coastal data provide a realistic representation of the principal events of the basins.
