Zusammenfassung
Summary
The viscometry of sputum can be practiced adequately with the use of a rotational viscometer that permits measuring small amounts of bronchial mucus and yields results that read in conventional physical units. Such instruments should also be equipped for determinations of the yield value of sputa. Sputum must not be homogenized for viscometry as this is altering greatly its physical properties resulting in a considerable loss of viscosity. Freezing of sputum has no bearing on viscosity. Storing sputum in an open jar at room temperature leads to an increase of viscosity, while storing in a closed jar at room temperature and particulary at body temperature results in rapid liquefaction.
Bronchial mucus is a non-homogeneous material with the properties of a non — Newtonian, elastic fluid. It is furthermore characterized by tixotrophy. Sputum viscometry should be practiced using various samples of the same sputum, in particular its most liquid and its most tenacious parts in order to understand its physical composition as a whole.
