Summary
Although 360-degree-feedback is to be used as a development tool, it is being used for performance appraisal as well resulting in a dysfunctional blending of personnel policy and leadership. Moreover 360-degree feedback can only partially fulfil performance appraisal purposes. Usage of this instrument can result in systematic and structural errors. Systematic errors are an outcome of the dysfunctional use of the instrument. Structural errors lie within the composition of the instrument. This paper presents arguments clarifying these errors and discusses possible ways to cope with these.
