Description: Sensors, Vol. 18, Pages 1203: Rolling Bearing Fault Diagnosis Based on an Improved HTT Transform Sensors doi: 10.3390/s18041203 Authors: Bin Pang Guiji Tang Tian Tian Chong Zhou When rolling bearing failure occurs, vibration signals generally contain different signal components, such as impulsive fault feature signals, background noise and harmonic interference signals. One of the most challenging aspects of rolling bearing fault diagnosis is how to inhibit noise and harmonic interference signals, while enhancing impulsive fault feature signals. This paper presents a novel bearing fault diagnosis method, namely an improved Hilbert time–time (IHTT) transform, by combining a Hilbert time–time (HTT) transform with principal component analysis (PCA). Firstly, the HTT transform was performed on vibration signals to derive a HTT transform matrix. Then, PCA was employed to de-noise the HTT transform matrix in order to improve the robustness of the HTT transform. Finally, the diagonal time series of the de-noised HTT transform matrix was extracted as the enhanced impulsive fault feature signal and the contained fault characteristic information was identified through further analyses of amplitude and envelope spectrums. Both simulated and experimental analyses validated the superiority of the presented method for detecting bearing failures.

Description: Accurately predicting precipitation trends is vital in the economic development of a country. This research investigated precipitation variability across 15 stations in the Swat River basin, Pakistan, over a 51-year study period (1961–2011). Nonparametric Mann-Kendall (MK) and Spearman’s rho (SR) statistical tests were used to detect trends in monthly, seasonal, and annual precipitation, and the trend-free prewhitening approach was applied to eliminate serial correlation in the precipitation time series. The results highlighted a mix of positive (increasing) and negative (decreasing) trends in monthly, seasonal, and annual precipitation. One station in particular, the Saidu Sharif station, showed the maximum number of significant monthly precipitation events, followed by Abazai, Khairabad, and Malakand. On the seasonal time scale, precipitation trends changed from the summer to the autumn season. The Saidu Sharif station revealed the highest positive trend (7.48 mm/year) in annual precipitation. In the entire Swat River basin, statistically insignificant trends were found in the subbasins for the annual precipitation series; however, the Lower Swat subbasin showed the maximum quantitative increase in the precipitation at a rate of 2.18 mm/year. The performance of the MK and SR tests was consistent at the verified significance level.

Description: Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) are promising for subwavelength waveguiding in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. However, they cannot be efficiently excited from spatial propagating or guided waves due to the mismatched momenta. In this paper, a THz coupler is designed to smoothly bridge SSPPs and guided (or propagating) waves. By using a tapered parallel-plate waveguide, the incident energies are efficiently compressed and coupled into a subwavelength gap. Then, the momenta differences are mitigated with a graded grating. The numerical simulations show that the relative bandwidth of the coupler reaches up to 127%, and the maximum coupling efficiency is 99%. More importantly, experiment results in the 0.22 THz–0.33 THz frequency range are also presented to verify the good performance of the coupler. The work provides a technical support for terahertz waveguiding.
