Abstract: Sürdürülebilirlik kavramının gittikçe önem kazandığı günümüzde, sürdürülebilirlik çalışmaları üniversitelerde de önem kazanmaya başlamış ve birçok üniversite, sürdürülebilir bir üniversite olma taahhüdünde bulunmak için süreçlerini yeniden organize etmeye başlamıştır.

Abstract: Plastics are used widely, and modern civilization would have to behave differently without them. However, plastics pose a threat to sustainable life. This paper focuses on some of the provisions being made for sustainable production to date and focuses on one key sector-plastic manufacturing-where sustainable production patterns are urgently needed. The paper describes the latest trends related to plastic production, its environmental impacts, and how this sector is adjusting its processes in order to meet the current and forthcoming legal requirements and consumer demands. The methodological approach of the study has focused on both a literature review on the one hand and the consumers’ perspective obtained via a survey on the other. These two approaches were then crosschecked in order to assess current trends in plastic manufacturing and to understand how consumers see these trends as being consistent with the aims of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12. The results obtained suggest that a greater engagement of consumers is needed in supporting the efforts to manage plastic more sustainably. Based on its findings, the paper provides useful insights linked to principles and tools for sustainable plastic production and design, and it demonstrates the usefulness and urgency of a sound materials management in order to tackle plastic pollution, one of today’s major environmental problems.

Abstract: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or sustainability is not only a matter of concern to governments or private sector companies, but has also become a focus of universities for a long time. In this study, a comparative analysis of the ranking and reporting systems which is used on a global scale in order to express universities’ community contribution position in terms of ‘Social Impact’ and the importance their communication practices with both internal and external stakeholders. Within the scope of the analysis, the main headings that make up the Social Impact, which is a pillar of the Corporate Social Responsibility effort of higher education institutions, can be classified as follows: ‘Rights Provided to Employees and Development of Employees’, ‘Human Rights and Equal Rights’, ‘Contribution to Economic and Social Development’ and ‘Environmental Practices’. While presenting the current status of the social impact of universities, the shortcomings in their current scope have also been taken into account as well as the importance of the relevant strategies and communication studies.

Abstract: The boom in technological advances in recent decades has led to increased demand for rare earth elements (REEs) (also known as rare earth metals) across various industries with wide-ranging industrial applications, including in the clean energy sector, but with some environmental, economic, and social footprint concerns. This paper reviews the complexities of the production, consumption, and reuse or recovery of REEs, presenting current trends in terms of potentials and challenges associated with this. This paper in particular focuses on the supply, demand, and (environmental and economic) sustainability of REEs, as a subset of critical raw materials. It does so via a critical stocktaking of key discussions and debates in the field over the past 15 years up until now, through a thematic analysis of the published and gray (policy) literature with a grounded theory approach. The paper finds that carefully balanced lifecycle sustainability assessments are needed for assessing the respective dimensions of the extraction, processing, and reuse or recovery methods for different types of REE sources and supplies to meet current and future demands. It furthermore diagnoses the need for taking into account some shifts and substitutions among REEs also for reasons of cost and locational supplies for the security of supply. Finally, the paper provides some overall policy recommendations for addressing current problems, with a conceptual framing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
