Notizen: Summary The classical procedure for the adaptive control of average reward Markov decision processes with an unknown parameter chooses at each stage a decision which is optimal for the average reward problem with the presently estimated parameter. But in many cases it is inefficient or impossible to compute each time the long run optimal policy. So successive approximation methods were proposed and investigated. We present a unifying and generalizing approach including both types of methods mentioned above and generating a lot of new procedures, too.

Notizen: Abstract Consider a parabolic stochastic partial differential equation perturbed by small noise observed on a time interval [0,T]. We construct the maximum likelihood estimators of the coefficients of the operators involved in these equations based on partial observations in the form of diffusion processes and show the asymptotic efficiency for loss functions with polynomial majorant as the variance goes to zero.

Notizen: Summary Discretization of the Theodorsen integral equation (T) yields the discrete Theodorsen-equation (T d ), a system of 2N nonlinear equations. A so-called ε-condition may be fulfilled. It is known that (T) has exactly one continuous solution. This solution gives the boundary correspondence of the normalized conformal map of the unit disc onto a given domainG. It is also known that (T d ) has one and only one solution if ε〈1 and at least one solution if ε≧1. We show here that for every ε≧1 and N∈ℕ\ {1} there is a domainG satisfying an ε-condition such that (T d ) has an infinite number of solutions. Moreover, givenK〉0 and any domainG that fulfills an ε-condition, we will construct a domainG 1 in the neighbourhood ofG that fulfills a max (1, ε+K)-condition such that (T d ) forG 1 has an infinite number of solutions. The underlying idea of the construction of those domains allows also to give important new facts about iterative methods for the solution of (T d ), even in the case ε〈1.

Notizen: Summary A generalization of the method of successive overrelaxation (SOR-method) toward the solution ofx=A x+b (the matrixA being of a special form) is treated. The method depends on two parameters instead of one but needs no more computational efforts. For matricesA with real and pure imaginary eigenvalues, those parameters are determined for which the method converges and those which give “fastest” convergence. The class of matricesA yielding convergence is enlarged in comparison to the SOR-method. The convergence is speeded up except in some cases. Three numerical examples are presented.

Notizen: A finite element formulation is presented for the equations governing the steady thermohydrodynamic behaviour of liquid lubricated bearings. This formulation permits application of the iterative solution scheme to bearings of arbitrary geometry.A generalized Reynolds equation resulting from the combination of the mass and momentum conservation equations is cast into variational form and used to derive general finite element equations. The method of weighted residuals with Galerkin's criterion is used to generate finite element matrix equations for the thermal energy equation. In addition to the finite element formulation, a discussion of appropriate finite difference techniques is also given for problems without complex geometry. As an example, the formulations are applied to obtain numerical solutions for a three-dimensional sector thrust bearing operating in the thermohydrodynamic regime. Pressure, velocity and temperature distributions are give, and the thermohydrodynamic solutions are compared with the results of classical isothermal theory.

Notizen: Abstract The paper is concerned with a discounted Markov decision process with an unknown parameter which is estimated anew at each stage. Algorithms are proposed which are intermediate between and include the “classical” (but time consuming) principle of estimation and control and the simpler nonstationary value iteration which converges more slowly. These algorithms perform one single policy improvement step after each estimation, and then the policy thus obtained is evaluated completely (policy-iteration) or incompletely (policy-value-iteration). The results show that especially both these methods lead to asymptotically discount optimal policies. In addition, these results are generalized to cases where systematic errors will not vanish when the number of stages increases.
