Kurzfassung:
In an effort to understand the mechanisms of friction-induced sounds, radiation from a wineglass excited by a violin bow has been investigated. Experiments on the vibration response of a glass shows the existence of an important dependence between the friction force and the vibration response of the glass. It is shown that under certain conditions there is a lock-in mechanism between the friction force and the glass response that leads to radiation at a particular natural frequency of the glass and its harmonics. An analytical model predicting the vibration response of a wineglass is presented. [Work supported by NSF and Institute for Manufacturing Research at Wayne State University.]
