    Description: A Monte Carlo based radiative transfer model has been developed for calculating the availability of solar radiation within the top 100 m of the ocean. The model is optimized for simulations of spatial high resolution downwelling irradiance Ed fluctuations that arise from the lensing effect of waves at the water surface. In a first step the accuracy of simulation results has been verified by measurements of the oceanic underwater light field and through intercomparison with an established radiative transfer model. Secondly the potential depth-impact of nonlinear shaped single waves, from capillary to swell waves, is assessed by considering the most favorable conditions for light focusing, i.e. monochromatic light at 490 nm, very clear oceanic water with a low chlorophyll a content of 0.1 mg/m**3 and high sun elevation. Finally light fields below irregular wave profiles accounting for realistic sea states were simulated. Our simulation results suggest that under open ocean conditions light flashes with 50% irradiance enhancements can appear down to 35 m depth, and light variability in the range of ±10% compared to the mean Ed is still possible in 100 m depth.

    Description: The quality of water level time series data strongly varies with periods of high and low quality sensor data. In this paper we are presenting the processing steps which were used to generate high quality water level data from water pressure measured at the Time Series Station (TSS) Spiekeroog. The TSS is positioned in a tidal inlet between the islands of Spiekeroog and Langeoog in the East Frisian Wadden Sea (southern North Sea). The processing steps will cover sensor drift, outlier identification, interpolation of data gaps and quality control. A central step is the removal of outliers. For this process an absolute threshold of 0.25m/10min was selected which still keeps the water level increase and decrease during extreme events as shown during the quality control process. A second important feature of data processing is the interpolation of gappy data which is accomplished with a high certainty of generating trustworthy data. Applying these methods a 10 years dataset (December 2002-December 2012) of water level information at the TSS was processed resulting in a seven year time series (2005-2011).

    Description: Data presented here were collected between November 2014 to April 2017 within the BEFmate project (Biodiversity - Ecosystem Functioning across marine and terrestrial ecosystems; https://www.icbm.de/verbundprojekte/befmate/) of the Universities of Oldenburg and Göttingen and the Nationalparkverwaltung Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer. Experimental islands and saltmarsh control plots were created in the back barrier tidal flat and in the saltmarsh zone of Spiekeroog island. Data were measured with a local installed weatherstation near the experimental setup. The weatherstation system used is a ClimaSensor US (Adolf Thies GmbH & Co. KG, D-Göttingen). The sensors were pre-calibrated by the manufacturer. Data were recorded with the Meteo-Online (V4.5.0.20253) software and processed using MATLAB (R2012b). Data were visually checked and outliers removed. The position was derived from the intern GPS-system. Date and Time is given in UTC.
