    Beschreibung: Multibeam bathymetry raw data using the ship's own Kongsberg (Simrad) EM 120 multibeam echosounder was not continuously recorded during RV METEOR cruise M74/4. Data was recorded on 15 days between 2007-11-30 and 2007-12-14. This dataset contains a survey at the islands of the Maldives. The approximate average depth of the entire dataset is around 700m. The data are archived at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, BSH) and provided to PANGAEA database for data curation and publication. Ancillary sound velocity profiles (SVP) files from the cruise are not archived at the BSH, thus no SVP files are added to this dataset. However, data analysis of the multibeam raw data revealed that SVP has been changed several times during the survey. This publication is conducted within the efforts of the German Marine Research Alliance in the core area "Data management and Digitalization" (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung, DAM). Data are unprocessed and therefore contains incorrect depth measurements (artifacts) without further processing. Overall, it appears that the data quality is rather good to moderate since the gridded hillshade data showed relatively few obstacles. It appears, that the Kongsberg EM 710 multibeam echosounder was simultaneously running during data acquisition since the coverage is nearly the same (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.942458). However this did not significantly affecting data quality (nevertheless, based on the data, whether a direct interference between both system exists is unknown). Data can be processed e.g. with the open source software package MB-System (Caress, D. W., and D. N. Chayes, MB-System: Mapping the Seafloor, http://www.mbari.org/products/research-software/mb-system/, 2022).

    Beschreibung: Three sediment cores were retrieved from marshes at the southern North Sea coast, recovering the past 100 years. Core RD04 originates from a natural back-barrier marsh (island of Sylt); cores BT02 and BT03 from a reinstated, former managed marsh (Eiderstedt peninsula). Whereas the marsh in Sylt is a low-energy, back-barrier marsh, the marsh in Eiderstedt is exposed to storm waves from the open North Sea. The study provides a characterisation of the sedimentary processes that control vertical salt marsh growth in different energetic settings. Data include grain-size analysis and radionuclide activity of 137-Cs, 210-Pb and 226-Ra. Measurements of the radionuclides were used to determine sediment accretion rates. Grain-size data were used to determine and quantify multiple sedimentary processes by the application of end-member modelling.

    Beschreibung: During a field campaign in the Austral spring 2012 the sedimentary architecture of a periglacial flood plain at the northeastern coast of Potter Peninsula (Area 5) was revealed using ground-penetrating radar (GPR, Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. SIR-3000). 14 profiles were collected using a mono-static 200 MHz antenna operated in common offset mode. Trace increment was set to 0.05 m. A differential global-positioning system (dGPS, Leica GS09) was used to obtain topographical information along the GPR lines. GPR data are provided in RADAN-Format, dGPS coordinates are provided in ascii format; projection is UTM (WGS 84, zone 21S).

    Beschreibung: Seismic and multibeam data, as well as sediment samples were acquired in the South Malé Atoll in the Maldives archipelago in 2011 to unravel the stratigraphy and facies of the lagoonal deposits. Multichannel seismic lines show that the sedimentary succession locally reaches a maximum thickness of 15-20 m above an unconformity interpreted as the emersion surface which developed during the last glacial sea-level lowstand. Such depocenters are located in current-protected areas flanking the reef rim of the atoll or in infillings of karst dolinas. Much of the 50 m deep sea floor in the lagoon interior is current swept, and has no or very minor sediment cover. Erosive current moats line drowned patch reefs, whereas other areas are characterized by nondeposition. Karst sink holes, blue holes and karst valleys occur throughout the lagoon, from its rim to its center. Lagoonal sediments are mostly carbonate rubble and coarse-grained carbonate sands with frequent large benthic foraminifers, Halimeda flakes, red algal nodules, mollusks, bioclasts, and intraclasts, some of them glauconitic, as well as very minor ooids. Finer-grained deposits locally are deposited in current-protected areas behind elongated faros, i.e., small atolls which are part of the rim of South Malé Atoll. The South Malé Atoll is a current-flushed atoll, where water and sediment export with the open sea is facilitated by the multiple passes dissecting the atoll rim. With an elevated reef rim and tower-like reefs in the atoll interior it is an example of a leaky bucket atoll which shares characteristics of incipiently drowned carbonate banks or drowning sequences as known from the geological record.
