    Notes: Summary Two species of the echinoid genus Sterechinus were documented from 92 trawl stations and 55 photographic stations in the eastern and southern Weddell Sea between 100 and 1200 m water depth. We found two species occuring along the whole shelf and slope, S. neumayeri being more abundant above 450 m water depth and S. antarcticus dominating the deeper regions. The size-frequency distributions of both species indicate differences in growth, mortality and longevity. First estimates of abundance and biomass of S. neumayeri and S. antarcticus are 0.085 ind/m2 & 0.005 gAFDW/m2 and 0.022 ind/m2 & 0.005 gAFDW/m2, respectively.

    Notes: Summary Species composition and ecology of holothurians on 52 stations in the Weddell Sea are described. A total of 26,833 specimens, belonging to 32 species, 22 genera, 7 families and 5 orders were collected during the Polarstern cruises ANT I, ANT II and ANT III. Two distinct groups showing different distributions, were identified by cluster analysis. In the first group, the majority of species belongs to the Aspidochirotacea and Elasipodida. They are adapted to soft bottoms and found at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula, in the Gould Bay area and in the Filchner Depression. The other group consists mainly of species belonging to the Dendrochirotida and individual representatives of the remaining orders. Substrates are sand, hard bottom and biogenic structures. This group maintains a higher species diversity, has a preference for shallower depths and has more species than the soft bottom group. A description of different spatial niches for several holothurians was possible using morphological features together with information obtained from underwater photographs. A comparison of the Weddell Sea species with those from East Antarctica and the area around the Antarctic Peninsula revealed close similarities for the depth range between 160 and 700m.

    Notes: Abstract Composition and distribution of asteroid and ophiuroid assemblages were investigated by means of Agassiz trawl catches at 34 stations in 220- to 1,200-m depth in the Weddell Sea and at 17 stations in 90- and 830-m depth off Northeast Greenland. A total of 86 species (48 sea stars, 38 brittle stars) were identified in the Weddell Sea whereas off Northeast Greenland a total of 26 species (16 sea stars, 10 brittle stars) were recorded. In both study areas, brittle stars were numerically more important than sea stars, and abundances generally decreased with water depths. Multivariate analyses revealed a conspicuous depth zonation of sea and brittle stars off Greenland. Very high abundances of Ophiocten sericeum and Ophiura robusta characterized the assemblages on shallow shelf banks whereas in greater depths Ophiopleura borealis, Ophioscolex glacialis and Ophiacantha bidentata became dominant, albeit at significantly lower densities. Mass occurrences of brittle stars, such as those recorded on Greenlandic shelf banks, have not been discovered in the Weddell Sea, where distinct assemblages were discriminated in deep shelf trenches as well as on the eastern and southern shelf. Ophioplocus incipiens, Ophiurolepis martensi and Ophiurolepis brevirima were the most prominent species on the eastern shelf. Ophiacantha antarctica, Ophiurolepis gelida and Ophionotus victoriae on the southern shelf, and Ophiosparte gigas as well as the asteriod Hymenaster sp., in the shelf trenches. Overall, the Weddell Sea housed conspicuously more asterozoan species than the waters off Greenland. Higher species diversity was also evident at both a regional and local scale, especially for the eastern Weddell Sea shelf. However, because many species from the Weddell Sea are closely related, the Weddell Sea assemblages were not significantly different from the Greenland ones in terms of taxonomic diversity and distinctness.

    Notes: Abstract Massive growth of sub-ice algal assemblages was recorded at two stations under first-year ice off northeast Greenland using a Remotely Operated Vehicle equipped with cameras. The assemblages mainly consisted of the diatom Melosira arctica (Ehr.) Dickie. A station sampled at the beginning of June 1993 revealed two forms of growth, curtain-like and rope-like, but with many intermediate types along the entire 150 m transect. The algal distribution was patchy. No significant sympagic fauna was found close to the algal masses. At a station sampled in the middle of July, similar algal concentrations seemed to be disturbed by ice-melting processes. Two casts under multi-year ice flows failed to show any algal aggregations. The observation of algal assemblages under first-year ice is in contrast to earlier reports from the Barents Sea where they have been recorded exclusively under multi-year ice.

    Notes: Abstract A community analysis of the mega-zooepibenthos at water depths between 99 and 1243 m was carried out for the Weddell and Lazarev Seas (47°W 77°S–12°E 70°S). A total of 144,531 specimens were counted and 313 taxa were identified from 3,768 photographs at 55 stations, which represented approximately 3,304 m2 of seafloor. The stations were classified into six groups according to their inventory of taxa although they represented rather a gradient from a rich and diverse suspension feeder assemblage to a poorer assemblage. In the latter, the proportion of deposit feeders was higher than in the former. A statistical comparison between biological and physical data showed that the faunistic pattern could best be explained by a combination of water depth and a geographical gradient. A positive correlation between the abundance of large sponges and the number of all other taxa was found.

    Description: Until the early 1980s, the composition and distribution of the asteroid (starfish), ophiuroid (brittle star) and holothurian (sea cucumber) bottom fauna of the southeastern Weddell Sea was virtually unknown. This southernmost part of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean is a typical high-latitude Antarctic region located in the circumpolar permanent pack-ice zone. It became accessible for large-scale scientific surveys only through the availability of modern ice-breaking research vessels, such as the German RV “Polarstern”. Here, we describe a dataset of the faunal composition and abundance of starfish, brittle star and sea cucumber assemblages in this area, based on collections from trawl catches carried out during three “Polarstern” cruises in 1983, 1984 and 1985. The set comprises a total of 4,509 records of abundances of 35 asteroid species (with a total of 2,089 specimens) and 38 ophiuroid species (with a total of 18,484 specimens) from 34 stations, as well as of 66 holothurian species (with a total of 20,918 specimens) from 59 stations including zero-abundances (absences). A synthesizing zoogeographical community analysis confirms the presence of three distinct assemblages of asteroids, ophiuroids, and holothurians with highest species richness on the eastern shelf. Overall, starfishes, brittle stars and sea cucumbers were present at all sites investigated in the study area but composition and abundance of asterozoan (asteroids and ophiuroids together) and holothurian fauna varied considerably. A synthesizing zoogeographical community analysis confirms the presence of three distinct assemblages of asteroids, ophiuroids, and holothurians with highest species richness on the eastern shelf. In the case of asterozoans, water depth and latitude seemed to be the most important drivers of assemblage distribution and composition. One of the holothurian assemblages was part of the rich macrozoobenthic community dominated by a diverse and abundant epifauna, mainly sponges and gorgonians. Another one was mainly composed of vagrant deposit-feeding species inhabiting a predominantly non-colonised substratum. In addition, a mixed holothurian assemblage was identified.
