    Description: Limited constraints on the variability of the deep‐water production in the Labrador Sea complicate reconstructions of the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during the Late Quaternary. Large volumes of detrital carbonates were repeatedly deposited in the Labrador Sea during the last 32 kyr, potentially affecting radiogenic Nd isotope signatures. To investigate this the Nd isotope compositions of deep and intermediate waters were extracted from the authigenic Fe‐Mn oxyhydroxide fraction, foraminiferal coatings, the residual silicates and leachates of dolostone grains. We provide a first order estimation of Nd release via dissolution of detrital carbonates and its contribution to the authigenic ԑNd signatures in the Labrador Sea. During the Last Glacial Maximum the Nd isotope signatures in the Labrador Sea would allow active water mass mixing with more radiogenic ɛNd values (−12.6 and −14) prevailing in its eastern part whereas less radiogenic values (ɛNd ∼ −18.4) were found on the western Labrador slope. The deposition of detrital carbonates during Heinrich stadials (2,1) was accompanied by negative detrital and authigenic Nd isotope excursions (ɛNd ∼ −31) that were likely controlled by dissolution of dolostone or dolostone associated mineral inclusions. This highly unradiogenic signal dominated the authigenic phases and individual water masses in the Labrador Sea, serving as potential source of highly unradiogenic Nd to the North Atlantic region, while exported southward. The Holocene authigenic ɛNd signatures of the coatings and leachates significantly differed from those of the detrital silicates, approaching modern bottom water mass signatures during the Late Holocene.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The Labrador Sea is an important region for deep water formation and for the ocean circulation in the Atlantic region. Over the last 32 thousand years, numerous discharges from melting glaciers added freshwater to the Labrador Sea which could help understand the future effects of current melting glaciers. This information is necessary to better constrain climate predictions in order to gauge the effects on the Global Ocean Water Circulation. However, past deep water production in the Labrador is still poorly constrained, complicating reconstruction of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation on different timescales. In this study we investigated changes in deep and intermediate water mass circulation patterns over the last 32 kyr based on the radiogenic Nd isotope compositions that serve as a water mass circulation proxy. Analysis of four marine sediment cores show that the deposition of large volumes of detrital carbonates during studied period had a large effect on the recorded in the sediment column signals. New data suggest active water mass circulation during the maximum extent of glacial ice sheets. The modern day ocean circulation patterns have emerged during the Late Holocene (6 ka).

    Notes: A confocal theta microscope using a single water-immersion objective lens is described. The system is based on the Zeiss Axioplan universal microscope, such that the illumination light is coupled into, and the detected light out of, the microscope optics via optical fibers attached to the reflector slider of the microscope. Conventional wide-field, laser-scanning confocal, confocal theta, and 4Pi-confocal theta microscopy modes are available with the system. As the design can be easily adapted to other microscopes, objective lenses, and wavelengths, it allows confocal theta techniques to be implemented in many standard systems. The design constraints and specifications for the microscope are given, as well as a demonstration of its performance. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper presents high-precision U–Pb ages and initial Hf isotopic compositions of zircon from mafic to felsic rocks of the Kohistan Arc Complex, Pakistan. Three magmatic pulses tapping geochemically different reservoirs are distinguished. Partial melting of mantle with MORB-type isotopic characteristics generated 99–92-Ma-old magmas. Plutonism around 85 Ma tapped a more fertile mantle source, most likely consisting of a 〉600-Ma-old metasomatically enriched mantle, or of mantle contaminated by an old sedimentary component; 82-Ma-old felsic peraluminous dykes have MORB-type isotopic compositions considered to be inherited from remelting earlier magmas in the deep base of the arc. The isotopic results demonstrate several and rather rapid changes in melt source region during arc development. They also show that there was subordinate continental influence and negligible importance of slab components for the Hf budget during the generation of the Kohistan Arc Complex.

    Notes: We provide new geological and isotope geochemical constraints on the evolution from continental rifting to sea-floor spreading along a segment of the Jurassic Tethyan margin exposed in the Platta and Err nappes (eastern Central Alps). Field observations show that the ocean–continent transition zone is characterized by oceanward-dipping detachment faults leading to the exhumation of subcontinental mantle rocks subsequently intruded by gabbro bodies and dolerite dikes, and covered by pillow basalts and radiolarites. Zircons extracted from gabbros and albitite yield concordant U–Pb ages of 161 ± 1 Ma; their initial ɛHf (+ 14.4 to + 14.9) as well as bulk rock ɛNd values of from gabbros and basalts (+ 7.3 to + 9.5) point to a MORB-type depleted mantle source. These data suggest that the onset of magmatic activity coincides with the latest phase of mantle exhumation along low-angle detachment faults and may be controlled by upwelling asthenosphere beneath a zone of exhumed continental mantle.

    Notes: Summary The effects of ryanodine and ryanodine steady-state condition (RSSC) on contractile-related calcium were examined in isolated guinea pig left atrial muscle. 1. RSSC is a specific irreversible condition occurring after a brief exposure to 1×10−7 M ryanodine, followed by washing. It is characterized by elimination of the contraction following a 10-sec rest interval (post-rest) and prolongation of the associated action potential duration (AP50%) from 78.9 to 160.8 msec with minimal alteration in steady-state tension development determined at 1 Hz. 2. Induction of RSSC with a ryanodine-bovine serum albumin conjugate produced similar alterations in post-rest contractile strength and action potential duration. 3. In the presence of 1×10−7 M ryanodine, guinea pig left atria exhibit a significant increase in total 45Ca efflux from two rapidly exchangeable compartments (compartment 1, t 1/2=1.58 min; compartment 2, t 1/2-8.20 min). 4. In atria loaded after the induction of RSSC, total 45Ca release was significantly reduced by 7.2% of the total exchange. 5. The 45Ca exchange space for RSSC atria was reduced from 23.22±0.81 to 19.85±1.22 ml per 100 g muscle without a significant reduction in the total exchange space. 6. From these results, it is concluded that the effects of low concentrations of ryanodine and RSSC are to alter the contractile calcium levels of the tissue, primarily from sarcolemmal membrane sites which regulate post-rest contractile strength and action potential duration.

    Notes: Summary Fruitflies (Drosophila melanogaster) may respond with landing reactions in tethered flight to unilateral progressive motion of single vertical dark stripes. The response frequency to repeated unilateral stimulation has a characteristic time course, a fast increase followed by a slower decrease. This behaviour is explained by the habituation of the input channels to a leaky integrator. The half-life of the integrated signal is in the range of 1 s. ‘Contralateral sensitization’ (CoS) describes the sensitization of the landing response to unilateral stimuli by preceding contralateral stimulation. It acts by increasing the initial reactivity, which habituates. The effects of CoS are thus still obvious after 1 min of repetitive stimulation. CoS can effectively be mediated by movement stimuli as well as by flickering light. We also show that binocular rotation rather than unilateral back to front motion inhibits the landing response (in the monocular part of the visual field). The biological significance of the described temporal characteristics of the landing response system and their possible neuronal basis are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Photoinduced electron transfer reactions play an important role in the primary step of the biological photosynthesis process. In an attempt to understand better the mechanism of the charge separation organic donor-acceptor molecules containing porphyrins and quinones were designed as photosynthesis models. In order to study the structure dependence of the photoinduced electron transfer twofold and fourfold bridged porphyrin-quinone systems with increasing donor-acceptor distance were synthesized (Figure 1) [1, 2, 3]. It was assumed that in these molecules the porphyrin and quinone should be linked in a rigid and well-defined orientation. To verify this assumption the conformational behavior of these systems was studied by high-temperature MD simulations in combination with conformational analysis of selected minimized structures [4, 5].

    Notes: Abstract The attachment of a virus to the host cell surface is influenced by enthalpic and entropic factors. A detailed evaluation of all possible energetic interactions including the effects of solvent molecules seems to be a promising way to gain deeper insights in the overall process of binding. Here we performed intensive molecular dynamics studies to compare the conformational space available for the unbound sialyllactose in aqueous solution and when complexed with influenza A hemagglutinin and the murine polyoma virus. In general the conformational freedom of sialyllactose is considerably reduced compared to the free state. Remarkably, two different conformations of the Siaα(2-3)Galβ glycosidic linkages are preferred (which are both populated in the free state) when complexed with either protein.
