    Description: The toxicity of sediments in Biscayne Bay and many adjoining tributaries was determined as part of a bioeffects assessments program managed by NOAA’s National Status and Trends Program. The objectives of the survey were to determine: (1) the incidence and degree of toxicity of sediments throughout the study area; (2) the spatial patterns (or gradients) in chemical contamination and toxicity, if any, throughout the study area; (3) thespatial extent of chemical contamination and toxicity; and (4) the statistical relationships between measures of toxicity and concentrations of chemicals in the sediments.The survey was designed to characterize sediment quality throughout the greater Biscayne Bay area. Surficial sediment samples were collected during 1995 and 1996 from 226 randomly-chosen locations throughout nine major regions. Laboratory toxicity tests were performed as indicators of potential ecotoxicological effects in sediments. A battery of tests was performed to generate information from different phases (components) of the sediments. Tests were selected to represent a range in toxicological endpoints from acute to chronic sublethal responses. Toxicological tests were conducted to measure: reduced survival of adult amphipods exposed to solid-phase sediments; impaired fertilization success and abnormal morphological development in gametes and embryos, respectively, of sea urchins exposed to pore waters; reduced metabolic activity of a marine bioluminescentbacteria exposed to organic solvent extracts; induction of a cytochrome P-450 reporter gene system in exposures to solvent extracts; and reduced reproductive success in marine copepods exposed to solid-phase sediments.Contamination and toxicity were most severe in several peripheral canals and tributaries, including the lower Miami River, adjoining the main axis of the bay. In the open basins of the bay, chemical concentrations and toxicity generally were higher in areas north of theRickenbacker Causeway than south of it. Sediments from the main basins of the bay generally were less toxic than those from the adjoining tributaries and canals. The differenttoxicity tests, however, indicated differences in severity, incidence, spatial patterns, and spatial extent in toxicity. The most sensitive test among those performed on all samples, a bioassay of normal morphological development of sea urchin embryos, indicated toxicity was pervasive throughout the entire study area. The least sensitive test, an acute bioassay performed with a benthic amphipod, indicated toxicity was restricted to a very small percentageof the area.Both the degree and spatial extent of chemical contamination and toxicity in this study area were similar to or less severe than those observed in many other areas in the U.S. The spatial extent of toxicity in all four tests performed throughout the bay were comparable tothe “national averages” calculated by NOAA from previous surveys conducted in a similar manner.Several trace metals occurred in concentrations in excess of those expected in reference sediments. Mixtures of substances, including pesticides, petroleum constituents, trace metals, and ammonia, were associated statistically with the measures of toxicity. Substances most elevated in concentration relative to numerical guidelines and associated with toxicity included polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT pesticides, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, hexachloro cyclohexanes, lead, and mercury.     Description: Toxic chemicals can enter the marine environment through numerous routes: stormwater runoff, industrial point source discharges, municipal wastewater discharges, atmosphericdeposition, accidental spills, illegal dumping, pesticide applications and agricultural practices. Once they enter a receiving system, toxicants often become bound to suspended particles and increase in density sufficiently to sink to the bottom. Sediments are one of the major repositoriesof contaminants in aquatic envronments. Furthermore, if they become sufficiently contaminated sediments can act as sources of toxicants to important biota. Sediment quality data are direct indicators of the health of coastal aquatic habitats.Sediment quality investigations conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and others have indicated that toxic chemicals are found in the sediments and biota of some estuaries in South Carolina and Georgia (NOAA, 1992). This report documents the toxicity of sediments collected within five selected estuaries: Savannah River, Winyah Bay, Charleston Harbor, St. Simons Sound, and Leadenwah Creek (Figure 1).     Notes: Enthalpies of components in ideal gas mixtures can be computed from existing data. However the isothermal effects of pressure and composition on partial enthalpies of mixture components have not been completely characterized. An investigation of the application of the Redlich-Kwong equation of state to the calculation of partial enthalpies is reported here. Methods are developed for convenient hand calculations and for computations on the IBM-650.Calculated partial enthalpies are compared with values derived from experimental P-V-T-C data for binary hydrocarbon mixtures. The calculated values agree fairly well with the derived data for pressures up to 2,500 lb./sq. in. abs. Best agreement is generally obtained when the mixture is well above the critical temperature of the more abundant component. No consistent bias was indicated however.

    Notes: The horizontal rotating cylinder blood oxygenator has been developed to minimize shear, eliminate bubbles, reduce holdup, and provide for rapid change of the controlled temperature of the blood.To aid in the development of this apparatus a detailed mathematical model was formulated. A simplified model was also developed which yielded an analytical expression relating the amount of material transferred between the gas and liquid in the apparatus to operating variables. In developing these models an attempt was made to include a realistic mechanism for oxygen absorption in blood.Preliminary experiments were carried out by absorbing carbon dioxide into distilled water in the horizontal rotating cylinder. These preliminary results were found to be in good agreement with previous theoretical predictions and calculations that indicated that the equipment should be adequate to act as a lung substitute for a dog. When it was employed in this manner during open-heart surgery, insufficient oxygen was transferred to support the dog.It is concluded that the most probable reason for failure of the horizontal cylinder to act satisfactorily as a blood oxygenator is poor mixing in the blood pool.

    Notes: The dispersion of emissions from a plume in a cross stream was studied using both experimental and theoretical techniques. Wind tunnel experiments were done for three jet to cross stream velocity ratios: R = 0.5, 1, and 2. The concentration in the plane perpendicular to the cross stream was measured using light scattering and photographic image analysis. The analysis of the negatives revealed the presence of two counterrotating vortices that greatly affected dispersion of smoke in the plume.Convection and random turbulent dispersion were modeled with a statistical convection simulator on a CYBER 205 computer. The input velocities to the convection model were obtained using experimental measurements. The model revealed the effects of the vortices on dispersion, and the concentration distributions across the plume were determined once the vortices had dissipated. The existence of the counterrotating vortices and their effects upon plume dispersion showed that the Gaussian plume model, which is widely used for modeling pollutant dispersion, is inapplicable in the near range of the model stack.

    Notes: Bimetallic Mo-Fe and Mo-Co sulfide clusters were anchored on Al2O3 and used for CO hydrogenation. In addition to methane, significant amounts of dimethyl ether were produced. The reaction orders obtained from power rate laws for methanation indicated that the surfaces of the catalytic ensembles were not completely saturated by CO, in contrast to the observations for most conventional CO hydrogenation catalysts. A kinetic analysis and parameter estimation was performed to identify the rate-determining step for methanation. A catalytic cycle was postulated that could account not only for the formation of methane and higher hydrocarbons, but also for dimethyl ether as a primary product.

    Notes: We present a method for synthesizing chemical process models that combines prior knowledge and artificial neural networks. The inclusion of prior knowledge is investigated as a means of improving the neural network predictions when trained on sparse and noisy process data. Prior knowledge enters the hybrid model as a simple process model and first principle equations. The simple model controls the extrapolation of the hybrid in the regions of input space that lack training data. The first principle equations, such as mass and component balances, enforce equality constraints. The neural network compensates for inaccuracy in the prior model. In addition, inequality constraints are imposed during parameter estimation. For illustration, the approach is applied in predicting cell biomass and secondary metabolite in a fed-batch penicillin fermentation. Our results show that prior knowledge enhances the generalization capabilities of a pure neural network model. The approach is shown to require less data for parameter estimation, produce more accurate and consistent predictions, and provide more reliable extrapolation.
