Notes: The study of strain patterns in deformed, transparent plastic placed between crossed Polaroids can shed considerable light on the responses of these plastics to stress. This article describes a study of the differing responses of three thermoplastics of varying degrees of toughness to the notched Izod impact test. The growth and waning of the strain patterns during impact are followed by means of high-speed cinematography; interpretation of the phenomena thus observed is aided by thin section microscopy of partially deformed specimens.

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to show how a theoretical molecular weight distribution can be found which would result in a given gel permeation chromatogram. Also, to show how the method can be applied to blending problems where one desires a given molecular weight distribution.

Notes: Blends of polycarbonate and the copolyester based on 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids are known to be completely miscible. This study was concerned with various chemical events which may occur in this system, particularly during melt processing. Degradation reactions were studied by both TGA and dilute viscometry techniques, and some indications of component interaction were noted. The residual titanium catalyst from the copolyester formation was found to produce color formation by interaction with phenolic end groups in the polycarbonate and to promote interchange reactions. Both events could be suppressed by deactivation of the residual catalyst with appropriate additives. An indication of the extent of interchange reactions was obtained by following the crystallizability of the copolyester component using differential scanning calorimetry.

Notes: The theory of perturbation chromatography and isotopic tracers has been applied to the investigation of the oxygen exchange reaction between carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the presence of a copper-zinc oxide catalyst at 205°C and atmospheric pressure. By analyzing the retention times of carbon-14 monoxide and carbon-14 dioxide tracers in six binary carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide carrier gas streams, it has been possible to shed light on the mechanism of the exchange reaction. Two types of carbon monoxide adsorption and two types of carbon dioxide adsorption were identified. Based on a numerical simulation of the experimental data, it has been concluded that the exchange reaction proceeds via the dissociative adsorption of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the surface oxygen species formed during the dissociative adsorption of carbon dioxide appears to be the active site for the exchange reaction.

Notes: A static vapor pressure apparatus is described which is especially suitable for mixtures. A vapor pressure flask with a built-in condenser allows the mixture to be degassed without change in composition. The entire apparatus is assembled from simple parts. Equilibrium is rapidly attained with either an external pressure or a liquid of known vapor pressure used as a reference.

Notes: Solubility and spectroscopic evidence are presented to support the formation of A-B block copolymers between monomers undergoing anionic polymerization (A units) and monomeric formaldehyde (B units). Comonomers included in the study were styrene, methyl and n-butyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, isoprene, and N, N-di-n-butylacrylamide. Similar evidence is presented on the formation of B-A-B copolymers between styrene and α-methylstyrene and formaldehyde; an A-(B-C) random copolymer of styrene, formaldehyde, and phenyl isocyanate (C) was also prepared. Experimental details for the preparation of high-purity, monomeric formaldehyde suitable for such work is described in some detail. It should be emphasized that this study was directed primarily toward showing the feasibility of preparing formaldehyde block copolymers; therefore, further work is needed to establish the quantitative nature of these reactions.

Notes: Interlaboratory comparisons on several materials are being conducted among a half-dozen laboratories having high speed tensile testers of widely different mechanical design and instrumentation. This progress report gives results from the first two round robins, the first on two plastic films and the second on copper wire. These materials were tested a t several speeds in the range of 1.3 to 130 m./min. (50 to 5000 in./min.). Preliminary conclusions and plans for future work are offered.

Notes: The mass spectra and thermal decomposition of Rhodamine F5G hydrochloride have been studied in detail. Fragmentation schemes are presented which show that fragmentation in the mass spectrometer involves principally the substituents on the 9-phenylxanthhydrol nucleus. Mass spectral studies of the related compounds Rhodamine B500 hydrochloride, Rhodamine F5G hydroxide and Rhodamine F5G dihydrogen phosphate are also reported. The thermal decomposition of Rhodamine F5G hydrochloride leads to initial loss of ethyl chloride and formation of the zwitterion which rearranges at higher temperature to a lactone. The further pyrolysis has also been studied.
