Notes: This study describes experiments on sedimentestuarine water slurries originating from a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh. We investigated the fate of tin(IV) or monomethyltin cation (MeSn3+) chlorides after their additon to slurries under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. We did not observe methylation of tin in anaerobic or aerobic slurries with and without added tin(IV). MeSn3+-amended samples occasionally formed small amounts of Me2Sn2+ or Me3Sn+ after extended periods of time, particularly when MeSn3+ remained in solution. The stability of MeSn3+ in slurries demonstrates that the absence of net methylation of tin(IV) is not due to rapid demethylation of MeSn3+ or its further methylation. Inorganic tin concentrations in the aqueous phase of anaerobic slurries spiked with MeSn3+ and unspiked slurries decreased by about 85% in 21 days and remained relatively constant until the end of the 59-day experiments. In similar anaerobic experiments about 25% of the MeSn3+ spike was adsorbed to sediment within 1 h and about 75% was adsorbed within 10 days. The lack of methylation and demethylation reactions in our aerobic and anaerobic slurries, which contrasts with two previous reports, undoubtedly reflects the absence of added nutrients and low concentrations of added tin(IV) in our experiments. We believe that our model experiments more accurately reflect conditions in salt marshes than do previous studies. We conclude that future model studies on methylation of inorganic tin should include. S. alterniflora because it is so prominent in observations of methyltin compounds in the estuary.

Notes: The synthesis of some acyloxy-methoxy-cinnamic acid derivatives, azidohydroxy butanoates, and azidohydroxy butanedioates in enantiomerically pure form is presented. Racemic diastereomerically pure educts were prepared in few steps. These racemates are resolved with lipases from Candida cylindracea (CC) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (P).

Notes: New optically active host compounds for chiroselective crystalline inclusion formation derived from natural lactic acid are synthesized. They enable useful enantiomer separations of different chiral compounds via cocrystallization and sorption on preparative scale including various ketones, lactones, alcohols, sulfoxides, and methyloxiranes. In the cases of 3-methylcyclohexanone, 4-methyl-δ-valerolactone, and 2-phenylpropanol, ees 〉 99% were obtained from one cocrystallization step using these hosts. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: New chiral host molecules 1 and 2 involving a bulky terpenoid unit and aromatic ethyne spacer groups were synthesized using Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of (+)-2α-ethynyl-2β-hydroxybornane (4) or (+)-2α-ethynyl-2β-hydroxyfenchane (5) with 9,10-dibromoanthracene. Host compounds 1 and 2 from crystalline inclusions with 1-methoxy-2-propanol (3) in 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometry, respectively. In the case of 1, complete enantiomer resolution (ee 〉 99%) of 3 is effected in one cocrystallization step. However, constitutional isomer 2 failed in the enantiomer separation of 3, which might be explained due to the different crystal lattice buildup of these cocrystals. Notes: N-[2,3-Bis(dimethylamino)cyclopropenylio]- and N-(tetramethylamidinio)pyridinium salts (trifluoromethanesulphonates and tetrafluoroborates) form 1:1 and 1:2 charge-transfer complexes with the pentakis(methoxycarbonyl)cyclopentadienide anion. The x-ray crystal structures of 1-[2,3-bis(dimethylamino)cyclopropenylio] pyridinium pentakis(methoxycarbonyl)cyclopentadienide tetrafluoroborate hydrate and of 1-[2,3-bis(dimethylamino)cyclopropenylio] pyridinium bis[pentakis(methoxycarbonyl)cyclopentadienide] were determined. In constrast, the tetra-cyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) radical anion reacts with the first-mentioned salts by C—C bond formation to give novel dicationic salts. Thereby, the radical anion attacks the pyridinium γ-position of the N-(tetramethylamidinio)-pyridinium dication, but the three-membered ring of the N-[2,3-bis(dimethylamino)cyclopropenylio] pyridinium system.

Notes: The four studied semi-rigid fluorenol derivatives differ only in the size of the 9-substituents. All four compounds crystallize with two molecules per asymmetric unit and with relatively low crystallographic symmetry [P1 for the 9-methyl derivative (1) and P21/n for the 9-(1-naphthyl) (3) and 9-(2-biphenylyl) (4) derivatives]. Crystal data: 1, a = 8·779(1), b = 11·570(1), c = 11·747(1), α = 91·197(5), β = 104·345(4), γ = 105·848(6)° 2, a = 8·425(1), b = 13·819(1), c = 23·902(2)Å, β = 95·87(1)° 3, a = 15·679(4), b = 8·567(2); c = 23·884(17)Å, β = 92·60(6)° 4, a = 7·770(6), b = 33·766(10), c = 13·649(4)Å, β = 95·30(1)°. Nevertheless, the packing modes are different. The 9-methylfluoren-9-ol molecules, forming H-bonded tetramers with full H-bond saturation, give rise to the lowest packing coefficient among the four compounds. The crystals of the 9-phenyl derivative are built up of H-bonded dimers, whereas those of the bulky 9-naphthyl and 9-diphenylyl derivatives consist of single molecules only. The latter two compounds, however, have a denser packing than the two that contain H-bonded aggregates. The crystal structures are held together mainly by ordinary Van der Waals forces. In the case of 9-biphenylyfluoren-9-ol, the structure seems to be stabilized also by weak H-bond-type interactions from the alcoholic hydroxyl group to the π-electron cloud of an aromatic ring in the neighbouring molecule the O…centroid distances are 3·182(3) and 3·248(4)Å, and in the 9-naphthyl derivative the OH groups are involved in some short (˜3·3Å) intermolecular approach, possibly indicating an electrostatically favourable packing for the compound.

Notes: X-ray data on the crystal and molecular structure of bis(biphenyl-2,2′-diyl)allene, reveal a remarkably strong deviation from linearity (170·1°) of the allene unit of the molecule. Ab initio calculations involving dimers of molecules yield good correlation with this geometry, showing that the non-linearity is due to packing effects in the crystal.

Notes: Crystalline host compounds consisting of a roof-shaped dicarboxinide framework and pendant diarylethanol analogous subunits were synthesized and shown to form inclusion complexes with small organic molecules such as alcohols, amines, ketones or polar and apolar organic solvents. Clathrate efficiency and selectivity depend on the particular host structure. The crystal and molecular structures of a free host compound (2a) and inclusion compounds [2a·3-methylcyclohexanone (1 : 1), 1a·3-methylcyclopentanone (1 : 1), 1a·2-methylcyclohexanone (1 : 1), 1b·butyronitrile (1 : 1), 1b·propan-1-ol (2 : 1) and 1b·(-)-fenchone (1 : 1)] were determined by x-ray diffraction analysis. In all the structures, the hydroxyl group is involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonds and the host and guest molecules are held by lattice forces only. The channels and cavities left in the host matrix are large enough to allow disorder or high thermal displacement parameters of the guest molecules. The local packing coefficients for all guests are 0·42 on average.
