In: CAGE – Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate Report Series, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Vol. 9 ( 2022-10-31)
Abstract: CAGE investigates the natural release of the greenhouse gas methane from the Arctic seafloor. Vast amounts of methane are trapped at shallow depths below the seafloor as gas hydrates, ice-like mixtures of gas and water. Current warming makes these shallow Arctic greenhouse gas reservoirs particularly vulnerable to thawing. CAGE investigates the processes involved, how these affect the ecosystem, the ocean and the atmosphere, and implications for future climate and environment.

Current ocean warming makes these shallow greenhouse gas reservoirs particularly vulnerable to thawing. Abstract: The cruise was a part of the Centre of Excellence for Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE) at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. The aim of the cruise was to visit two study areas: the first a new study site called Maud Basin in southern Bjørnøyrenna – an area where industry data has shown promising evidence for gas leakage associated with pingo/crater formation and an underlying hydrocarbon reservoir. The second site is the Crater Area previously visited by CAGE in 2015 (15-5). More specific objectives of the cruise were to: Obtain multibeam and seismic lines over pingos and craters in Maud Basin, southern Bjørnøyrenna, already identified on industry seismic dataRe-examine the high density flares areas of the Crater Area previously surveyed in 2015 for any changesSurvey new areas in the surrounding region of the Crater AreaObtain plankton net data from gas leaking sites for analyses of biomass The cruise may be known as: CAGE16_2

Abstract: The cruise was part of the GlaciBar (Glaciations in the Barents Sea Area) project (PetroMaks project funded by The Norwegian Research Council, Statoil, Det Norske and BG Norway) and the recently funded Center of Excellence for Gas Hydrate Environments and Climate (CAGE) (funded by The Norwegian Research Council) The objectives of this cruise were: Examine and map marine features connected to the last deglaciation of the Svalbard/Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS) in the northwestern part of the Barents Sea, within the Storfjordrenna, south of Spitsbergen. Mapping spatial distribution of glacial rafts in the central Barents Sea. Map and study the field of depressions/craters in the central Barents Sea, which are linked to gas hydrate eruptions following the deglaciation of the region. Perform coring in order to improve the postglacial chronology and understanding of the dynamics related to the deglaciation of the Barents Sea area. Perform subsampling of free “head space” gas for further geochemical studies within sediment cores. The cruise may be known as: CAGE13_KA
