Summary A persistent deficiency in the circulation of blood in the lower part of the body of rabbits was produced by a constriction of the distal aorta. This led to a marked activity of the bone marrow, chiefly an erythropoiesis, in the upper half of the body where the blood flow remained sufficient. This erythropoiesis was most pronounced four weeks after the application of the aortic stricture and was attributed to the effect of the so-called “hemopoietins” which are produced in chronic ischemic hypoxemia. In the lower part of the body directly effected by the obstruction in blood flow the hypoxemic damage to the hemopoietic tissues was most prominent. Here the bone marrow was without reaction. After prolonged aortic constriction and obstruction to the flow of blood (8–12 weeks) changes indicative of continued inactivity could be observed. In the peripheral blood the development of a detectable erythropoiesis (polyglobuly), as it is frequently observed in general hypoxemia, failed to occur under the conditions of chronic hypoxemia of the distal part of the body. On the contrary, there was an anemia which indicated that the chronic deficiency of oxygen could induce not only a stimulation of hematopoiesis but also in sufficient degree it could cause a severe damage of the blood forming tissues.
Notes:
