Notizen: Abstract Satellite-borne altimeters have had a profound impact on geodesy, geophysics, and physical oceanography. To first order approximation, profiles of sea surface height are equivalent to the geoid and are highly correlated with seafloor topography for wavelengths less than 1000 km. Using all available Geos-3 and Seasat altimeter data, mean sea surfaces and geoid gradient maps have been computed for the Bering Sea and the South Pacific. When enhanced using hill-shading techniques, these images reveal in graphic detail the surface expression of seamounts, ridges, trenches, and fracture zones. Such maps are invaluable in oceanic regions where bathymetric data are sparse. Superimposed on the static geoid topography is dynamic topography due to ocean circulation. Temporal variability of dynamic height due to oceanic eddies can be determined from time series of repeated altimeter profiles. Maps of sea height variability and eddy kinetic energy derived from Geos-3 and Seasat altimetry in some cases represent improvements over those derived from standard oceanographic observations. Measurement of absolute dynamic height imposes stringent requirements on geoid and orbit accuracies, although existing models and data have been used to derive surprisingly realistic global circulation solutions. Further improvement will only be made when advances are made in geoid modeling and precision orbit determination. In contrast, it appears that use of altimeter data to correct satellite orbits will enable observation of basin-scale sea level variations of the type associated with climatic phenomena.

Notizen: Abstract Purpose To assess the use of percutaneous endovascular stent insertion in the management of superior vena cava (SVC) occlusion. Methods Percutaneous endovascular stent insertion was attempted in 13 patients, age range 20–72 (mean 55.5) years, with symptomatic total occlusion of the SVC. Twelve patients had known malignant disease of the thorax. The other patient (age 20) had chronic SVC obstruction, the cause of which was unknown at the time of the procedure. There was initial angiographic assessment and removal of thrombus by thrombolysis (10 patients) and/or clot aspiration (3 patients). Following successful lysis or aspiration, single or multiple endovascular stents were inserted. Results The inability to cross the lesion with a guidewire prevented stent insertion in 2 patients (15.4%). There was primary success in the remaining 11 patients (84.6%), with associated symptomatic relief. Some recurrence of symptoms occurred in 5 of the 11 patients (45.5%) after a time interval ranging from 14 to 183 days. In all cases of symptomatic recurrence, patency was reestablished with further thrombolysis and/or further stent insertion. All successfully treated patients have since died. All 11 patients remained symptomatically free of SVC occlusion until death, with postprocedure survival ranging from 5 to 243 days. Conclusion The percutaneous management of complete SVC occlusion with thrombolysis and/or clot aspiration followed by stent insertion is safe and effective, giving sustained symptomatic relief.

Notizen: Summary Cytogenetic examination of transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. plants obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer to cotyledon- and root-explants or by direct gene transfer into protoplasts revealed a high percentage of tetraploid or aneuploid transformants. Depending on the transformation procedure used, 13% (root explant transformation), 33% (cotyledon explant transformation), or 38% (direct gene transfer) of the transformants showed aberrant ploidy levels. A good correlation between the ploidy level of a plant and the size of its pollen grains was observed. This allows quick and simple testing of the ploidy level of transgenic Arabidopsis plants.

Notizen: Summary Resource selection is a function of interactions of organisms (competition, predation) as well as characteristics of the resource and organisms. I provide a quantitative model that integrates these factors. I use the model to predict profitability of fruits to tropical birds, but the model and its predictions are applicable to a wider array of systems and organisms. Profitability of a fruit is determined by rewards provided by the pericarp (mass and caloric yields) relative to costs (metabolic requirements, handling time, search time, behavioral interference, predator avoidance) associated with finding and eating that fruit (Fig. 1). Fruits increase in profitability with increases in fruit size until increases in handling time offset increases in pericarp mass. The fruit size at which increases in handling time offset increases in pericarp mass varies among bird species due to differences in bill and body size. Decreases in feeding rate due to decreasing numbers of fruits and increasing search time causes reduced profitability and this effect becomes more severe with decreasing fruit size and/or increasing frugivore size. Consequently, as fruit size decreases relative to frugivore size, fruit abundance becomes increasingly important to fruit selection by frugivores. However, while profitability of resources is a function of characteristics of the resources and the organisms, biological interactions can change profitability rankings; resources that may be more profitable in the absence of behavioral interference, exploitation competition, or predation risk can become less profitable in the face of these interactions. The proposed model integrates these interactions to provide predictions of resource selection and these predictions are supported by published studies.

Notizen: Summary Island size, habitat heterogeneity, and distance from major (“mainland”) stands of habitat were examined relative to composition and number of coexisting reptile species dependent on upland habitats of 11 mountain and 4 riparian habitat islands. Species richness increased with area on mountain islands, but area was unimportant in predicting species richness on riparian islands. Instead, isolation was of primary importance. Regardless of factors determining species richness, composition of species were deterministic; small assemblages were always totally included subsets of all larger assemblages. This pattern of determinism apparently reflects selective extinctions and the inability of species to recolonize due to the insurmountable barrier imposed by the Sonoran Desert.

Notizen: Abstract  Actinomycetous infections typically involve either the head and neck or the extremities following a traumatic implantation. Classic clinical associations are draining sinus tracts. This case report describes the pathologic and MR findings of a relatively acute mycetomatous process involving the soft tissues. Pathologic findings in this case included an occasional granule composed of gram positive, thin branching elements. These and other findings were consistent with actinomycetes bacterium infection. The discussion centers around the use of MR, both with and without gadolinium, in evaluating this type of granulomatous infection. Infiltration of the adjacent subcutaneous tissues was easier to appreciate on both the T1-weighted images without gadolinium and the T1-weighted images with gadolinium when compared to the T2-weighted images. Signal characteristics as described in this case report may suggest a granulomatous process.

Notizen: Abstract A gene (SCPEPCD1) encoding phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) was isolated from the C-4 monocot sugarcane (Saccharum hybrid var. H32-8560). SCPEPCD1 is ca. 6800 bp long, with 10 exons. The entire gene sequence from −1561 to 262 bp downstream of the putative poly(A) addition signal is reported. A low-level, essentially constitutive pattern of expression, amino acid sequence similarities to other ‘housekeeping’ PEPC enzymes, and the absence of DNA sequence elements conserved in the upstream region of maize and sorghum C-4-specific PEPC genes indicate that SCPEPCD1 encodes a housekeeping PEPC. Despite this, a motif proposed to act as a phosphorylation site in light-mediated activation of photosynthetic PEPC enzymes [10] is present in the SCPEPCD1 protein; evidence is presented for the presence of this site in other housekeeping PEPC proteins.

Notizen: Summary Biochemical determinations of non-collagenous protein and hydroxyproline were made on rat skeletal muscles following 7 days of space flight aboard the NASA space shuttle mission SL-3. Relative to ground-based controls, the wet weight of each experimental muscle was significantly reduced. This was concomitant with a reduction in noncollagenous protein in the muscles. Protein concentration, however, was reduced only in slow-twitch muscles. The effect of space flight on the concentration and hydroxyproline content was different among the muscles. As a result, the loss of muscle mass in some muscles was the consequence of a reduction in both collagenous and non-collagenous proteins, while in others it was primarily the result of a non-collagenous protein loss.

Notizen: Abstract The importance and requirements for catalytic activation of sialyl donors are discussed, leading to the acid sensitive phosphite and phosphate moiety, respectively, as leaving group and nitriles as solvent. Therefore, from readily availableN-acetylneuraminic acid, derivative1 with phosphochloridites2a-f and Huenigs' base sialyl phosphites3a-f were prepared and isolated in high yields. Oxidation of3a, c withtert-butyl-hydroperoxide afforded the corresponding phosphates4a, c. As expected, phosphites3 could be activated in acetonitrile by catalytic amounts of TMSOTf; thus, from3a-e as donors and lactose derivatives8A, B as acceptors the ganglioside building blocks9A and9B, respectively, were obtained in good yields. The best results were obtained with diethyl phosphite derivative3a as sialyl donor, which exceeded by far the reults obtained with the corresponding phosphate derivative4a. Trisaccharide9B was transformed into known9A and into the fullyO-acetylated GM3-trisaccharide10.
