    Abstract: The purpose was to examine the brain activation patterns with acupuncture using real acupoint (Liv3) versus sham acupoint in healthy, sedated children using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Functional magnetic resonance imaging scans of the brain for 10 healthy, sedated children were taken during stimulation of real acupoint (Liv3 [Taichong]) and a nearby sham acupoint in a randomized order, employing twisting and nontwisting methods using a blocked paradigm using a 2.0-T scanner. The functional data were analyzed by using SPM 99. Various regions of the brain were activated in 2 acupoints. However, the pattern was different for the 2 acupoints. We suggest specific cerebral activation patterns with acupuncture might explain some of its therapeutic effect.

    Abstract: We study the effect of acupuncture on brain activation patterns in children with cerebral palsy using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). fMRI of the whole brain was performed in 11 children with cerebral palsy and 10 healthy children during stimulation of a common acupoint in Traditional Medicine [Liv3 (Taichong)] on the left foot. We use both twisting and nontwisting methods with a blocked paradigm on a 2.0 Tesla MRI scanner. Functional data were analyzed by using Statistical Parametric Mapping software (SPM 99). Both signal increase and decrease in various regions of the brain were found in both groups of children. However, the pattern was different for the 2 groups, especially with decreases in signal regions. We suggest that the observed differences between children with cerebral palsy and healthy children with the stimulation of acupoint Liv3 might be due to blockage of the liver meridian in children with cerebral palsy.

    Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to investigate the pharmacokinetics of NM394 (an active metabolite of prulifloxacin) and evaluate the dose relationship and accumulation characteristics after single and multiple doses of prulifloxacin. Thirty healthy volunteers were given 132 mg, 264 mg, and 528 mg of prulifloxacin capsules in a randomized test corresponding to low, medium and high groups for single dose trial. With one-week washout period, 264 mg of prulifloxacin capsules were given to eight volunteers of the medium group for multiple doses trial. The concentration of NM394 in serum was determined by a sensitive HPLC method and its pharmacokinetic parameters were analyzed by DAS2.0.1 and evaluated by SPSS statistic software (version 13.0). Various parameters were determined. Numerical experiments show that the pharmacokinetic parameters of NM394 displayed first order linear pharmacokinetic character. There are no big differences in pharmacokinetic characteristics of NM394 between single and multiple doses. Almost no significant accumulation of drugs is observed after multiple doses of 264 mg per day for 7 d and chronopharmacokinetics were first observed.

    Abstract: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of selective arterial embolization (SAE) in the treatment of renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs). Methods This was a retrospective review of medical records and imaging findings from patients with renal AMLs who attended our clinic and received SAE between January 2007 and January 2014. Only patents with complete medical records, preoperative computed tomography scans using typical imaging and follow-up data were included. Results A total of 79 patients were enrolled in the study. Technical and clinical success rates were 100% and 91% ( n = 72), respectively. Only two patients experienced major complications. Post-embolization syndrome (i.e. fever, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting) was reported in 68 (86%) patients, but all symptoms were mild and resolved with conservative measures. Mean radiological and clinical follow-up periods were 16.8 and 35.9 months, respectively. In 75 (95%) patients, tumours decreased in size; mean ± SD tumour size significantly decreased from 8.4 ± 3.5 cm pre-embolization to 6.7 ± 3.0 cm post-embolization . Conclusions This study provides long-term evidence that SAE is a safe and effective method in the treatment of patients with renal AMLs.

    Abstract: This study was performed to determine the relationship between the minimum distance from the radiofrequency ablation (RFA) needle tip to the tumor and local tumor progression (LTP) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nodules and identify prognostic factors for LTP. Methods We reviewed 197 patients (197 nodules) who underwent RFA after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for HCC from January 2010 to January 2015. Three-dimensional registration of images was used to calculate the minimum distance from the tip to the tumor. We then divided the minimum distance into two groups: 〈 2 and ≥2 mm. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography was performed after treatment. The LTP rate was calculated 1 and 3 years after RFA. We performed multivariate analysis to identify independent prognostic factors for LTP. Results The cumulative 1-year LTP rates in the 〈 2- and ≥2-mm groups were 82.7% and 4.3%, respectively, and the cumulative 3-year LTP rates in the two groups were 94.8% and 10.8%, respectively. The minimum distance from the needle tip to the tumor was an independent prognostic factor for LTP. Conclusions A minimum distance of 2 mm from the needle tip to the tumor should be completely ablated along with the tumor.

    Abstract: This retrospective study investigated the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on depression, anxiety, response rates, and adverse events in patients with locoregional advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: A total of 269 patients with diagnosis of stage III-IVA NPC received either CBT plus chemoradiotherapy (CBT group, n = 136) or treatment as usual (TAU) plus chemoradiotherapy (TAU group, n = 133). Patients in the CBT group received a series of 6 CBT sessions for 6 weeks during concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) score at baseline, the completion of radiotherapy, and 6, 12, and 24 months after radiotherapy. Response rates and adverse events were also evaluated. Results: Patients in the CBT group showed significantly less depression and anxiety than patients in the TAU group after the completion of radiotherapy ( P  〈  .05). Complete response rates were 99.3% (135/136) and 92.5% (123/133) in the CBT group and TAU group with a small effect size (Phi coefficient = .171), respectively ( P = .005). Compared with the TAU group, the CBT group showed a significantly lower incidence of acute adverse events and late toxic effects. Conclusions: The addition of CBT to chemoradiotherapy significantly reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms. CBT combined with chemoradiotherapy is associated with improved response rates, with reduced incidence of toxic effects in patients with locoregional advanced NPC. Based on this study, we registered a randomized controlled clinical trials to better define the role of CBT in patients with locoregional advanced NPC (Registration number: ChiCTR2000034701).

    Abstract: This study evaluated the metabolic parameters and texture features of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET/CT) for the diagnosis and differentiation of endometrial atypical hyperplasia (EAH), EAH with field cancerization (FC), and stage 1A endometrial carcinoma (EC 1a). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the metabolic parameters of PET/CT in 170 patients with diagnoses confirmed by pathology, including 57 cases of EAH (57/170, 33.53%), 45 cases of FC (45/170, 26.47%), and 68 cases of EC 1a (68/170, 40.0%). Then, the texture features of each tumor were extracted and compared with the metabolic parameters and pathological results using nonparametric tests and linear regression analysis. The diagnostic performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) values obtained from receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: There were moderate positive correlations between the PET standardized uptake values (SUVpeak, SUVmax, and SUVmean) and postoperative pathological features with correlation coefficients ( r s ) of 0.663, 0.651, and 0.651, respectively ( P 〈 .001). Total lesion glycolysis showed relatively low correlation with pathological characteristics ( r s = 0.476), whereas metabolic tumor volume and age showed the weakest correlations ( r s = 0.186 and 0.232, respectively). To differentiate between the diagnosis of EAH and FC, SUVmax displayed the largest AUC of 0.857 (sensitivity, 82.2%; specificity, 84.2%). Five texture features were screened out as Percentile 40, Percentile 45, InverseDifferenceMoment_AllDirection_offset 1, InverseDifferenceMoment_angle 45_offset 4, and ClusterProminence_angle 135_offset 7 ( P 〈 .001) by linear model of texture analysis (AUC = 0.851; specificity = 0.692; sensitivity = 0.871). To differentiate between the diagnoses of FC and EC 1a, SUVpeak displayed the largest AUC of 0.715 (sensitivity, 67.6%; specificity, 77.8%), and 2 texture features were identified as Percentile 10 and CP_angle 135_offset 7 (AUC = 0.819; specificity = 0.871; sensitivity = 0.766; P 〈 .001). Conclusions: SUVmax and SUVpeak had the highest diagnostic values for EAH, FC, and EC 1a compared with the other tested parameters. SUVmax, Percentile 40, Percentile 45, InverseDifferenceMoment_AllDirection_offset 1, InverseDifferenceMoment_angle 45_offset 4, and ClusterProminence_angle 135_offset 7 distinguished EAH from FC. SUVpeak, Percentile 10, and ClusterProminence_angle 135_offset 7 distinguished FC from EC 1a. This study showed that the addition of texture features provides valuable information for differentiating EAH, FC, and EC 1a diagnoses.

    Abstract: Primary brain tumors are a rare occurrence in comparison to other malignancies, the most predominant form being glioma. Commonly, exposure to ionizing radiations and inheritance of associated conditions such a neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis are the most common causes of development of glioma. However, understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive glioma development is limited. We explore the role of aberration of microRNA namely miR-494-3p through long noncoding RNA WT1-AS in the development of gliomas. In this study, we found that, levels of WT1-AS were significantly reduced in glioma tissues and cell lines. The miR-494-3p levels were negatively correlated with WT1-AS levels. The cellular proliferation and invasiveness decreased in WT1-AS transfected cell lines. Further the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of chemotherapeutic agent temozolomide was significantly reduced in the presence of WT1-AS. The cotransfection of WT1-AS and miR-494-3p reduced activation of phospho-AKT (p-AKT). Expression of miR-494-3p is modulated by binding to long noncoding RNA WT1-AS. Deregulation of WT1-AS leads to aberrant expression of miR-494-3p leading to hyperactivation of AKT. This malformation may result in altering protective immune responses in malignancies. Targeting of WT1-AS, miR-494-3p, and AKT may be novel therapeutic options in treatment of glioma.
