    Abstract: The use of flow-injection analysis to reduce mass-dependent interferences in inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry has been assessed. Results are presented which demonstrate nearly complete elimination of analyte-signal suppression under operating conditions where dispersion ( D) is approximately 25. Furthermore, results obtained with flow-injection analysis exhibit greater precision, take less time, and suffer only a 40% reduction in sensitivity, compared to continuous-flow analysis.

    Abstract: A large-scale concurrent validity study is described in which 321 first-level management employees in a Canadian provincial telephone company were given a comprehensive assessment battery and were rated on their work performance. Measures from five assessment domains-cognitive abilities, personality/motivational traits, administrative skills, biodata, and supervisory judgment were administered in one-day assessment sessions. Independent assessments of 12 work-performance appraisal dimensions were provided by 165 higher-level supervisors of the 321 participants, using a combination of behaviorally anchored rating scales and behavioral observation scales. The assessment domains were examined individually as to their predictive efficacy, and simple composites of measures from several domains were correlated with the criterion appraisal dimension scores. Concurrent validity coefficients obtained for all 12 criterion dimensions and for an overall management performance criterion ranged from .36 to .56 for women and from .33 to .51 for men.

    A Bibliometric Analysis of an International Research Ethics Trainee Program

    Abstract: We used bibliometric analysis to evaluate the citations associated with publications by trainees in the Fogarty International Center's International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development program. Papers published between 2004 and 2008 were identified for analysis. The outcome measures were total citations, h-index, and i-10. A total of 328 manuscripts were identified, with a yearly average of 66 publications and 363 citations. The median number of citations per paper is 3 (IQR Q1–Q3:6). 12.6% (n = 53) of papers were cited over 10 times and the h-index is 22, indicating that 22 papers had been cited at least 22 times. The data indicate that trainees have been productive and contributed to the scholarly literature. Future studies to benchmark this performance with other bioethics education programs are required to make interpretation of citation analysis more meaningful.

    Abstract: The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases practice guidelines list severe cardiac disease as a contraindication to liver transplantation. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement has been shown to decrease all-cause mortality in patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not considered candidates for surgical aortic valve replacement. We report our experience of liver transplantation in a patient with severe aortic stenosis and moderate aortic insufficiency who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement with Child-Pugh Class C disease at a Model For End-Stage Liver Disease score of 29. The patient had a difficult post procedure course that was successfully medically managed. After liver transplantation the patient was discharged to home on postoperative day 11. The combination of cardiac disease and end stage liver disease is challenging but these patients can have a successful outcome despite very severe illness.

    Abstract: Postmortem examinations have taken place over the past several thousand years. Despite this, the definition of a “complete” autopsy remains nebulus and the subject of controversy. Although ‘minimal autopsy practice standards’ have been published by professional bodies globally, recognition of, and adherence to those standards remains sporadic. An underlying refutation that ‘autopsies can never be complete’ – the reductio ad absurdum fallacy – has influenced many forensic pathologists’ opinions about autopsy. More pragmatic pathologists attempt to balance the financial and workload burdens of autopsies with the principles of adequacy and accuracy. Some medical examiners cite “statutory duty” as the force guiding the nature and completeness of their work, and as such, external examinations, partial autopsies and other limited variants are substituted for complete autopsies. Although it is impossible to perform every conceivable test in any one autopsy, an evidence-based approach guided by three forensic autopsy goals – statutory duty, the creation of a minimal dataset for societal and governmental inquiry, and maintenance of practitioner competency – ensure the completeness of any one postmortem examination.

    Abstract: A 13-mm torch is evaluated for use in inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). With this system, an analytically useful plasma can be supported at 1.35 kW applied rf power and 9.35 L/min total argon flow. The effect of operating parameters (nebulizer flow rate, rf power, sampling depth, and ion-lens voltages) on analyte ion signals was examined, also. The optimal nebulizer-gas flow rate, sampling depth, and power for the 13-mm torch were found to be comparable to those used for the standard (18-mm) torch. Similar trends were seen between the two systems when these parameters were varied. Under optimal operating conditions, the 13-mm torch was found to produce comparable sensitivities, oxide-ion ratios, and doubly charged ion ratios. The most significant difference exhibited between the two torches was the independence of the doubly charged ion ratio on plasma parameter settings for the 13-mm torch.

    Abstract: This study investigated knowledge, attitudes, and preventive efforts of Malaysian college students regarding health risks associated with passive smoking, as well as possible directions for intervention and health education programs. Students responded anonymously to a structured written questionnaire. Statistical analyses were conducted to examine (1) differences in knowledge, attitudes, and preventive efforts between smokers and nonsmokers and between men and women; (2) the relationship between smoking by parents, siblings, and friends, and students' knowledge, attitudes, and preventive efforts; and (3) relationships between knowledge, attitudes, and preventive efforts. Peer groups and siblings had a substantial influence on students' attitudes toward passive smoking and their preventive efforts when exposed to passive smoke. A regression analysis revealed a statistically significant linear dependence of preventive efforts on knowledge and attitudes, with the attitude component playing the dominant role. This research suggests that educational efforts on passive smoking, directed toward young college students in developing countries such as Malaysia, should concentrate heavily on changing attitudes and reducing the effects of peer group and sibling influences.

    Abstract: The utility of a multiple-domain assessment approach to management selection was examined in detail. On the basis of concurrent validity results obtained in a recent large-scale validity study by the present authors, the issue of utility, or concrete gains, that the participating organization would realize was investigated from a number of different perspectives and through use of several different utility models. In addition, some new procedures were examined for estimating the variability of job performance, a quantity needed in the linear regression-based utility models. Empirical utility results are presented, and some methodological considerations connected with utility analysis are noted.

    Abstract: The relations between economic hardship, coping, and family relationships in African American, Latino, and Euro-American families were investigated using a multimethod design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data-collection procedures. Survey data regarding the effects of economic hardship on individuals' lifestyles were collected from parents in the three ethnic groups. Simultaneously, focus group discussions with mothers from each of the ethnic groups examined the effects of economic hardship on different facets of their family relationships. Results indicate that although there were certain similarities in the families' experiences of economic distress, there were significant differences in the overall pattern of relations among the three ethnic groups. The findings underscore the importance of considering ethnic and cultural factors when investigating the effects of economic hardship on family functioning, as well as the utility of employing both qualitative and quantitative methods to further researchers' understanding of the impact of economic conditions on families.
