Abstract: To assess the validity of survey data collected from computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI) for the prediction of retention behavior, data from 754 AF pilots were collected at two points in time. In January 1988 these pilots took part in a CATI study that revealed their intentions to sign contracts for additional years of military service in return for bonus payments of up to $12,000 per year. Beginning in January 1989, these pilots were offered aviation bonus contracts, similar to those studied with the CATI, under the Aviator Continuation Pay (ACP) program enacted by Congress. Two key variables from the survey—career intent and bonus intent—were very accurate in predicting ACP behavior at both the aggregate and the entity levels.

Abstract: We present a 4-year-old Honduran boy with mild neurodevelopmental delays, growth delays, dysmorphic features, and small genitalia. Chromosome analysis initially revealed a single X chromosome and a marker chromosome derived from the short arm of chromosome 9 which was consistent with Turner syndrome as only 1 sex chromosome could be identified. However, on further analysis, he was found to have an unbalanced translocation involving the short arm of chromosome 9 and the long arm of the Y chromosome. The translocation resulted in partial trisomy 9p and partial monosomy Yq. The patient’s clinical features are felt to be the result of partial trisomy 9p. In addition, partial monosomy Yq is associated with male infertility. Testing of the patient’s parents was normal, indicating this was a de novo translocation. Additional evaluations of this child and his parents allowed an accurate assessment of his diagnosis, long-term prognosis, and chance of recurrence.

Abstract: Symbolic interactionism is a theoretical perspective in sociology that addresses the manner in which society is created and maintained through face-to-face, repeated, meaningful interactions among individuals. This article surveys past theory and research in the interactionist tradition. It first provides an overview of three main trajectories in symbolic interactionist thought, focusing on the work of Herbert Blumer (the Chicago School), Manford Kuhn (the Iowa School), and Sheldon Stryker (the Indiana School). A brief summary of each figure’s general perspective on symbolic interactionism is given, followed by a discussion of the research methodology that defines and distinguishes each. The article then reviews and assesses the empirical research that has emerged from these trajectories over the past decades, beginning with the classical studies of the mid-twentieth century and culminating in research programs that have emerged in the contemporary era. Specifically, this article surveys significant contributions to the symbolic interactionist literature in areas such as dramaturgy, cultural studies, postmodernism, gender/status/power, self and identity, collective behavior and social movements, and social context and the environment. It concludes with a discussion of future directions symbolic interactionists should take in continuing to develop the field.

Abstract: In this direct replication of Mueller and Oppenheimer’s (2014) Study 1, participants watched a lecture while taking notes with a laptop ( n = 74) or longhand ( n = 68). After a brief distraction and without the opportunity to study, they took a quiz. As in the original study, laptop participants took notes containing more words spoken verbatim by the lecturer and more words overall than did longhand participants. However, laptop participants did not perform better than longhand participants on the quiz. Exploratory meta-analyses of eight similar studies echoed this pattern. In addition, in both the original study and our replication, higher word count was associated with better quiz performance, and higher verbatim overlap was associated with worse quiz performance, but the latter finding was not robust in our replication. Overall, results do not support the idea that longhand note taking improves immediate learning via better encoding of information.

Abstract: Balloon and stent angioplasty of the pulmonary arteries (PAs) are frequently performed following superior cavopulmonary connection (SCPC), not only to normalize the caliber of the affected PA but also in hopes of maximizing downstream growth over time. There are limited data on the impact on subsequent PA growth prior to total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC). Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort study was performed on children who underwent transcatheter (TC) PA intervention following SCPC between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2018. Growth of treated and contralateral PAs was measured at the lobar bifurcation (distal branch PA [DBPA]) and in the proximal lower lobe (lower lobe branch [LLB] ) on serial angiograms. Growth rate was evaluated using a mixed-effect model clustered by individual patient with an interaction term for treated PA and time to evaluate for differential growth rates between treated and contralateral PAs. Results: Thirty-five patients underwent TC PA intervention following SCPC, at a median of 70 days (interquartile range: 19-297 days) postoperatively. Significant growth was seen at both DBPA and LLB for raw (0.8 mm/year, 95% CI: 0.6-1.0, P 〈 .001 for both) and body surface area (BSA) adjusted measures (8.4mm/m 2 /year, 95% CI: 5.6-11.2, P 〈 .001; 7.9 mm/m 2 /year, 95% CI: 5.5-10.2, P 〈 .001). The growth rate of the treated vessel was not significantly different from that of the contralateral vessel at the DBPA or LLB positions for raw ( P = .71, .70) or BSA-adjusted measurements ( P = .86, .64). Conclusion: Transcatheter PA intervention was associated with normal distal PA growth rate relative to the untreated side.

Abstract: Stroke survivors often experience poststroke depression and suicidal ideation. Purpose to determine the frequency and odds ratio of depression and suicidal ideation among stroke survivors, in comparison to those without stroke, and to identify demographic factors associated with elevated odds of depression and suicidal ideation among stroke survivors. Methods Secondary analysis of the Canadian Community Health Survey, a population-based sample. Logistic regressions of depression and suicidal ideation were conducted. Results Among those with stroke, 7.4% were depressed, in comparison to 5.2% of those without stroke ( P = 0.01). The cumulative lifetime frequency of suicidal ideation was 15.2% among stroke survivors in comparison to 9.4% of those without stroke ( P # 〈 0.001). After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, stroke survivors had twice the odds of depression and suicidal ideation in comparison to those without stroke (odds ratio = 2.21; 95% confidence interval = 1.61, 3.04 and odds ratio = 2.07; 95% confidence interval = 1.68, 2.55, respectively). When functional limitations and activities of daily living limitations were added to the analyses, there was a substantial decrease in the associations between stroke and depression (odds ratio = 1.29; confidence interval = 0.93, 1.80) and between stroke and suicidal ideation (odds ratio = 1.37; 95% confidence interval = 1.10, 1.69). Caucasians and younger individuals had higher odds of poststroke depression and suicidal ideation. Stroke survivors with functional limitations had much higher odds of suicidal ideation than those without such limitations. Conclusions Regular screening for depression and suicidal ideation is important for stroke survivors, particularly those with substantial physical limitations.

Abstract: Although the field of otolaryngology has experienced a decline in the number of applicants to our residency programs, otolaryngology remains a highly competitive field with an extremely strong applicant pool. Many highly qualified candidates cannot obtain a position in our field each year, and many of these candidates choose to reapply the next year. Data are lacking regarding reapplicants’ success rate and the best gap year employment and training options for these reapplicants. Reapplicants were studied prospectively via a two-stage survey during the 2014–2015 and 2015–2016 application cycles. Success rates for the overall group were compared to those from published data, and success rates between subgroups were also compared. First-time reapplicants in the study performed extremely well. Their match rate (19/22) was not significantly different from that of traditional otolaryngology applicants (551/619, p = 0.73) and was significantly higher than that of nontraditional applicants not in our cohort (23/62, p 〈 0.001). No significant difference was found between applicants by employment/training activities, with both researchers (11/12) and surgical interns (8/10, p = 0.57) performing well. Predictors of reapplicant success could not be assessed because only 3 reapplicants in the cohort were unsuccessful. First-time otolaryngology reapplicants remain a highly competitive group of applicants to our field, regardless of employment/training activities undertaken after graduating medical school.

Abstract: Instrumental techniques are compared for usage in the determination of atmospheric H 2 S which has been preconcentrated on Cd(II)-exchanged zeolite. The study covers the range of 0.01 to 100 μg of immobilized sulfide. For high concentrations (2–100 μg), combustion analysis followed by nondispersive IR is the simplest and most precise technique, and results with the use of this method are accurate to ±3% relative. In the range of 0.25–40 μg, the sulfide, after conversion to methylene blue, may be determined by conventional spectrophotometry, with a relative precision of ±13%. For the lowest concentration range investigated (0.01–2.0 μg), photoacoustic spectroscopy gave the only quantitative results after the H 2 S was converted to methylene blue.

Abstract: Bush dogs ( Speothos venaticus) are a small, wide-ranging neotropical pack-hunting canid whose ecology is relatively poorly known. Here, we document new, repeated observations of bush dog groups in east-central (Barbilla National Park) and south-eastern (La Amistad International Park) Costa Rica that suggest either that their recent or historic range has been underestimated, or that their potential range in Central America may have recently expanded and could now include not only borderlands with Panama but perhaps a substantial portion of the Talamanca Mountains up to 120 km to the north-northwest and at elevations up to 2,119 m. In light of their inherently low density, documenting the current and future distribution of bush dogs in Central America will be challenging.
