    Abstract: Social hierarchy governs the physiological and biochemical behaviors of animals. Intestinal radiation injuries are common complications connected with radiotherapy. However, it remains unclear whether social hierarchy impacts the development of radiation-induced intestinal toxicity. Dominant mice exhibited more serious intestinal toxicity following total abdominal irradiation compared with their subordinate counterparts, as judged by higher inflammatory status and lower epithelial integrity. Radiation-elicited changes in gut microbiota varied between dominant and subordinate mice, being more overt in mice of higher status. Deletion of gut microbes by using an antibiotic cocktail or restructuring of the gut microecology of dominant mice by using fecal microbiome from their subordinate companions erased the difference in radiogenic intestinal injuries. Lactobacillus murinus and Akkermansia muciniphila were both found to be potential probiotics for use against radiation toxicity in mouse models without social hierarchy. However, only Akkermansia muciniphila showed stable colonization in the digestive tracts of dominant mice, and significantly mitigated their intestinal radiation injuries. Our findings demonstrate that social hierarchy impacts the development of radiation-induced intestinal injuries, in a manner dependent on gut microbiota. The results also suggest that the gut microhabitats of hosts determine the colonization and efficacy of foreign probiotics. Thus, screening suitable microbial preparations based on the gut microecology of patients might be necessary in clinical application.

    Abstract: Influenced by water injection, a dominant flow channel is easily formed in the high water cut stage of a conglomerate reservoir, resulting in the inefficient or ineffective circulation of the injected water. With gel flooding as one of the effective development methods to solve the above problems, its parameter optimization determines its final development effect, which still faces great challenges. A new optimization method for gel flooding is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the gel flooding parameters were obtained through physical experiments; then, an experimental model of gel flooding was established according to the target reservoir, and parameter sensitivity analysis was carried out. Next, a history matching of the gel flooding experiment was carried out. Finally, history matching of the target reservoir was also carried out, and a gel flooding scheme was designed and optimized to determine the best parameters. The experimental results showed that the gelation time was 4 h and the gel viscosity was 6332 mPa·s; the breakthrough pressure, resistance factor (RF), and residual resistance factor (RRF) all decreased with the increase in permeability. The gel had a good profile control ability and improved oil recovery by 16.40%. The numerical simulation results illustrated that the porosity of the high permeability layer (HPL) had the greatest impact on the cumulative oil production (COP) of the HPL, and the maximum polymer adsorption value of the HPL had the largest influence on the COP of the low permeability layer (LPL) and the water cut of both layers. Benefiting from parameter sensitivity analysis, history matching of the gel flooding experiment and a conglomerate reservoir in the Xinjiang A Oilfield with less time consumed and good quality was obtained. The optimization results of gel flooding during the high water cut stage in a conglomerate reservoir of the Xinjiang A Oilfield were as follows: the gel injection volume, injection rate, and polymer concentration were 2000 m3, 50 m3/d, and 2500 mg/L, respectively. It was predicted that the water cut would decrease by 6.90% and the oil recovery would increase by 2.44% in two years. This paper not only provides a more scientific and efficient optimization method for gel flooding in conglomerate reservoirs but also has important significance for improving the oil recovery of conglomerate reservoirs.

    Abstract: In the process industry, an alarm system is one of the important ways of condition monitoring. Due to the complexity and irregularity of process information in condition monitoring, there are too many false alarms in the current alarm system. In order to solve the problem of designing an alarm system, this paper proposes a multivariate alarm design method based on the evidence reasoning (ER) rule, considering interval-valued reliability, which can make full use of process information to make accurate alarm decisions. Firstly, the referential evidence matrixes (REMs) are constructed based on the training samples of process variables, and the real-time samples of the process variables are converted into alarm evidence by activating the REMs. Alarm evidence is then fused by the ER rule. In this fusion process, in order to better describe the uncertainty of the process information, the reliability of the alarm evidence is characterized by random variables with certain probability distributions, and it can be adjusted in dynamic intervals according to the real-time change of alarm evidence. Finally, the reactor fault case is implemented in the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process, which shows that the adjustment of interval-valued reliability can adapt to the irregular change of process information and obtains consistent alarm results to further improve the accuracy of alarm decisions.

    Abstract: Unpredictable fluctuant passenger flow usually exists in urban metro operations. In this situation, traditional predetermined metro timetables cannot always meet the variation of passenger flow, and thus the service quality of the metro system could be affected profoundly. In this paper, by introducing an innovative metro operation method without timetables, we develop a nonlinear integer programming model to continually optimise the train operation to deal with detected real-time passenger flow variations. We aim to minimise the total passenger waiting time in the research time horizon under the vehicle number constraint. A modified genetic algorithm integrated with a macroscopic metro simulator is adopted to solve the proposed model. A case study based on the Beijing Metro Line 19 is implemented to provide a quantitative result for evaluating the proposed passenger flow-oriented metro operation method without timetables. Compared to traditional timetable-based metro operation, the method could significantly improve the metro operation’s flexibility and the quality of services.

    Abstract: Intestinal injury caused by ionizing radiation (IR) is a main clinical issue for patients with cancer receiving abdominal or pelvic radiotherapy. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a neurohormone that the pineal gland in the brain normally secretes. The study aimed to disclose the potential function of melatonin in intestinal injury induced by IR and its mechanism. Pretreatment with melatonin enhanced the 30-day survival rate of the irradiated mice and promoted the recovery of the intestinal epithelium and hematopoietic function following abdominal irradiation (ABI). Melatonin altered the gene profile of the small intestines from mice following ABI. The enriched biological process terms for melatonin treatment prior to radiation were mainly involved in the immune process. LPS/IL-1-mediated inhibition of RXR Function, TWEAK signaling, and Toll-like receptor signaling were the most activated canonical pathways targeted by melatonin. An upstream analysis network showed that Tripartite motif-containing 24 (TRIM24) was the most significantly inhibited and S100 calcium binding protein A9 (S100A9) activated. TRIM24 activated atherogenesis and cell viability in breast cancer cell lines and S100A9 inhibited the metabolism of amino acids. Melatonin has radioprotective effects on ABI-caused intestinal injury. The mechanisms behind the beneficial effects of melatonin were involved in activation of the immunity. It is necessary to conduct further experiments to explore the underlying mechanisms.

    Abstract: Research has rarely examined how the COVID-19 pandemic may affect teens’ social media engagement and psychological wellbeing, and even less research has compared the difference between teens with and without mental health concerns. We collected and analyzed weekly data from January to December 2020 from teens in four Reddit communities (subreddits), including teens in r/Teenagers and teens who participated in three mental health subreddits (r/Depression, r/Anxiety, and r/SuicideWatch). The results showed that teens’ weekly subreddit participation, posting/commenting frequency, and emotion expression were related to significant pandemic events. Teen Redditors on r/Teenagers had a higher posting/commenting frequency but lower negative emotion than teen Redditors on the three mental health subreddits. When comparing posts/comments on r/Teenagers, teens who ever visited one of the three mental health subreddits posted/commented twice as frequently as teens who did not, but their emotion expression was similar. The results from the Interrupted Time Series Analysis (ITSA) indicated that both teens with and without mental health concerns reversed the trend in posting frequency and negative emotion from declining to increasing right after the pandemic outbreak, and teens with mental health concerns had a more rapidly increasing trend in posting/commenting. The findings suggest that teens’ social media engagement and emotion expression reflect the pandemic evolution. Teens with mental health concerns are more likely to reveal their emotions on specialized mental health subreddits rather than on the general r/Teenagers subreddit. In addition, the findings indicated that teens with mental health concerns had a strong social interaction desire that various barriers in the real world may inhibit. The findings call for more attention to understand the pandemic’s influence on teens by monitoring and analyzing social media data and offering adequate support to teens regarding their mental health wellbeing.
