Abstract: Abstract. Self-Determination Theory predicts that fulfillment of the three psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness predicts well-being. Fulfillment of these needs has long been considered a uni-dimensional construct consisting of need satisfaction and (reverse coded) need dissatisfaction. Recent research suggests that satisfaction and dissatisfaction should be separated. We tested whether need satisfaction and dissatisfaction can be distinguished psychometrically and whether they have unique effects in predicting well-being. We used data from a daily-diary study of 135 participants over the course of 42 days. A six factor solution (with one satisfaction and one dissatisfaction factor per need) for the Balanced Measure of Psychological Needs scale (BMPN) fitted the data best at both the between-person and the within-person level of analysis. We concluded that (a) the BMPN can be used to reliably assess satisfaction and dissatisfaction of the three needs specified by Self-Determination Theory; (b) need satisfaction and dissatisfaction can and should be separated psychometrically; (c) these findings hold at both the between-person and the within-person level of analysis; (d) all three needs predict well-being at the within-person level, but only competence and relatedness predict well-being at the between-between-person level; and (e) need satisfaction and dissatisfaction predict unique variance in well-being.

Abstract: Abstract. In this study we tested the psychometric properties of a German version of the Balanced Measure of Psychological Needs scale (BMNP; Sheldon & Hilpert, 2012 ), a questionnaire to assess the degree of fulfillment of the three basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. In Study 1, 251 participants completed this questionnaire, as well as measures of life satisfaction, self-esteem, depression, loneliness, and personality traits via online assessment. Results indicate that a six-dimensional structure fit the data adequately well. Furthermore, all three needs independently predicted life satisfaction and depression over and above personality traits. Self-esteem was only predicted by relatedness satisfaction and competence dissatisfaction, and loneliness was only predicted by relatedness. In Study 2, we revised the BMPN by replacing one item and largely replicated the results obtained in Study 1. Study 3 showed that the subscales of the BMPN are only moderately stable over 1 week supporting the assumption of the BMPN being a state measure. Together, these results suggest that the revised German version of the BMPN is a reliable and valid measure to assess satisfaction and dissatisfaction of the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung.

Abstract: Abstract. Conflict avoidance increases across the adult lifespan. This cross-sectional study looks at conflict avoidance as part of a mechanism to regulate belongingness needs ( Sheldon, 2011 ). We assumed that older adults perceive more threats to their belongingness when they contemplate their future, and that they preventively react with avoidance coping. We set up a model predicting conflict avoidance that included perceptions of future nonbelonging, termed anticipated loneliness, and other predictors including sociodemographics, indicators of subjective well-being and perceived social support (N = 331, aged 40–87). Anticipated loneliness predicted conflict avoidance above all other predictors and partially mediated the age-association of conflict avoidance. Results suggest that belongingness regulation accounts may deepen our understanding of conflict avoidance in the second half of life.

Abstract: Inspired by Birren’s now-classic statement that gerontology is “data-rich and theory-poor” as well as previous research on the role of theory in social gerontology provided by Bengtson and colleagues, we introduce a new coding scheme capable of extracting and quantitatively analyzing relevant information regarding key study characteristics of gero-psychological research, including references to theory. Our goal was to provide a detailed description of gero-psychological research as well as to detect change, while also comparing articles published between 1990 and 1994 and between 2000 and 2004 (the same periods as in Bengtson et al.’s research). We relied on a randomly drawn sample of N = 535 empirical articles, representing 50% of the material published in the two flagship journals in the field of gero-psychology during the target time periods, i.e., Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences (JoG) and Psychology and Aging (P & A). We found reasonable interrater agreement for the new coding scheme. Regarding key study characteristics, we found, for example, that research related to memory and learning significantly decreased from 38% to 27.3%, whereas research related to social psychology and social-psychological processes as well as research on successful aging increased significantly. References to theory increased from 30% to 44%. We conclude that the intensity of theory use in gero-psychology and respective change from 1990–1994 to 2000–2004 has been consistently somewhat higher than in social gerontology (increase from 27% to 39%), though overall surprisingly low. We discuss this finding in the light of different theoretical entities used in gero-psychological research.

Abstract: Abstract. Volitional control (i. e., efforts to maintain goal striving in the face of obstacles) is an integral part of self-regulated learning and an important factor for explaining individual differences in academic performance. However, differences between the various methods for assessing volitional control have rarely been investigated. Two common methods are (a) offline questionnaires, in which respondents aggregate experiences over a longer period of time, and (b) online questionnaires such as learning diaries, which assess respondents’ experiences close to the learning event. We compared these assessment approaches in 96 medical students who prepared for a high-stakes exam. Achievement of self-set learning goals was measured objectively via logfiles of students’ activities on a learning platform. Daily reports of volitional control explained substantial variance in the achievement of learning goals over and above the offline questionnaire, indicating incremental validity of online assessments of self-regulation. Moreover, the daily reports of volitional control could explain intra-individual day-to-day variance in goal achievement. The current study, thus, suggests that learning diaries, albeit cumbersome, have clear advantages over offline questionnaires.

Abstract: A randomly drawn sample of 535 empirical articles representing 50% of the papers published between 1990 and 1994 and between 2000 and 2004 in Psychology and Aging and the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences were analyzed based on a newly developed coding scheme. This instrument allowed us to systematically evaluate types and contents of geropsychological theoretical entities used. We found that theoretical entity use significantly increased from 66.3% to 82.0%, which is much higher than only coding the material according to the explicit use of “theory,” as we have found in previous work (30% versus 44%, respectively; Drapaniotis, Neubauer, & Wahl, 2013 ). We also observed that even the most extensively cited entities, i.e., the mental-slowing hypothesis, the inhibitory-deficit hypothesis, and socioemotional selectivity theory, were cited in only a rather limited number of articles. We conclude that the field of geropsychology relies on a wide and quite heterogeneous array of theoretical entities.
